Exploring Life & Business with Nicole Bailey of The Agorá Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Bailey.

Hi Nicole, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi! My name is Nicole Bailey and I am the Founding Owner of a company called The Agorá Co. I was born and mostly raised in Baltimore City where I was fortunate to witness my grandparents own and operate a small bar in East Baltimore for years. However, it wasn’t until I attended an all-girl  highschool in the city called Western Senior High School where I developed a passion for entrepreneurship. While attending highschool, I joined a club called FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). Having to take part in various club activities,  I was able to learn about the importance of networking, how to write a business plan, and I was even able to participate in a business competition that afforded me (and other young ladies) the opportunity to start and maintain a profitable business in Mondawmin Mall for an entire Summer.

Fast-forward to adulthood, entrepreneurship is still a prevalent part of my life. I’ve started a few small businesses over the years but none like my current business venture, The Agorá Co.

The Agorá Co. is a home and gardening décor retailer founded on one simple philosophy, a home is meant to be a place where lives are authentically lived, hearts are transformed and memories are made.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting The Agorá Co. was easy but growing the business has proved to be challenging. From building brand awareness to finding working capital, each task has proved to be daunting to say the least. However, the challenges I’ve had to face have helped me to fine-tune my own awareness about the core values of the company. Which has afforded me to create not just a home and gardening décor business but also an experience for The Agorá Co. customers.

There has also been a strain on my mental and physical health. As of this year I had to learn how to invest in “me” time and establish healthy boundaries for myself. I want to offer my best yes when making business decisions and I can’t do that if I’m not presenting the best me to myself, my family, my friends, my employees, or to my customers.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Agorá Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

Agorá is a Greek word meaning “marketplace” or “gathering place” which is why the name The Agorá Co. was selected. I wanted to open a sophisticated marketplace that sold quality home accessories and gifts encouraging people to gather in authentic and welcoming spaces within their homes.

In the forefront, The Agorá Co. is primarily known for selling home and garden décor which includes linens, flatware, ceramics, small to mid sized furniture, plants, planting containers, planting supplies, holiday décor, and so much more. The Agorá Co. even offers two different subscription box services. The first one is called The Harvest Box. Customers who purchase this quarterly subscription box will find a mixture of small gardening tools, supplies, seeds, and gardening décor in each box. The second subscription box offered by The Agorá Co. is called The Gathering Box. Subscribers for this quarterly box will receive small home accessories such as linens, flatware, and a variety of other small household accessories.

On the back end of business, The Agorá Co. is proud to be community-driven. Over the last two years, I have been able to spearhead a neighborhood within the Loch Raven Village community to come together and clean up what was once an eyesore and turn it into a beautiful neighborhood alley garden. It has helped to cut down on trash dumping, petty crime, and reduce rodent issues.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?

The Agorá Co. is 100% woman-owned, 100% minority-owned, Established in Towson, Maryland in 2018, and ships to customers worldwide.
