Today we’d like to introduce you to MV Fitness.
Hi MV , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story starts with my parents, who immigrated from Barbados in search of a better life. I was born and raised in West Baltimore, and this city has shaped who I am. Early on, I was told that if you choose a career you love, you’ll never truly work a day in your life. For me, that passion was fitness. Becoming a personal trainer was a natural path, and to this day, that advice still rings true—because I genuinely love what I do. Some days, it doesn’t feel like work at all.
Since 2008, MV Fitness has called a beautifully repurposed Mount Vernon condominium home. I became the owner in 2022, but my journey here began years earlier as a trainer. Through dedication, persistence, and a genuine passion for fitness, I was able to turn a long-standing dream into reality by purchasing the gym.
MV Fitness is where Baltimore’s rich history meets a workout worth showing up for. It’s more than just a gym—it’s a space built on community, consistency, and pride.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey hasn’t been without its challenges, but that’s part of the process. I’ve had my share of hiccups along the way, and each one has been an opportunity to learn and grow. After all, a smooth sea never makes a skilled sailor.
Transitioning from trainer to owner came with a learning curve, but it’s one I’ve embraced. While I may not love every aspect of the business—especially the administrative side—I’ve come to understand that it’s all part of building something meaningful. The hours can be long, but the reward of doing what I love and creating a space for others makes it all worthwhile.
As you know, we’re big fans of MV Fitness . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
What truly sets us apart isn’t just how the gym looks—it’s how it feels and how we run it. We’ve created a space where people feel at home, where every face is familiar and every name matters. In larger gyms, it’s easy to get lost and become just another membership. Here, you’re part of a community.
We’re a boutique fitness space that blends personality with purpose, offering an experience that’s both effective and enjoyable. We take pride in everything we offer and strive to deliver the highest quality of fitness possible—because to us, it’s about more than just a workout. It’s about creating an environment people genuinely look forward to being part of.
At the core of MV Fitness are what we call the three F’s: Friendliness, Fitness, and Fun. That philosophy shapes everything we do. As someone born and raised in Baltimore, I see Mount Vernon as a truly special place, and this gym is my way of giving back to the city that’s given so much to me.
MV Fitness is designed to be a one-stop shop—you don’t need multiple memberships or studios to reach your goals. We offer Pilates (both mat and reformer), indoor cycling, barre, yoga, boxing, personal training (individual and group), HIIT, and resistance training. Everything you need is right here.
And then there’s the space itself: a grand chandelier overhead, a library tucked into the personal training studio—details that make it feel nothing like a traditional gym. Because it isn’t. It feels like home.
We’re also continuing to grow and evolve. Today, we’re proud to be one of the few gyms in Mount Vernon offering Reformer Pilates, led by certified trainers Nicole Donadio and Allie Cole.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I do have advice!
Work hard – When people see your work ethic, they take notice. It can open doors you didn’t even know existed.
Be consistent – Give your best effort every day, even when no one is watching. Consistency builds trust and results.
Know your worth – Only you can define your value. Once you understand it, communicate it with confidence and don’t be afraid to ask for what you deserve.
Master your craft – There are many people doing what you do—strive to stand out. Push yourself to be the best and make others take notice.
Personality – Show up with positive energy. Even on tough days, bring your best attitude—because how you make people feel matters.
