Exploring Life & Business with Mitch Froemming of Eight Five Bookkeeping

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitch Froemming.

Hi Mitch, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in rural Minnesota on a chicken farm, which taught me two things: I didn’t like the cold, and I didn’t like chickens. My dad was a CPA (turned chicken farmer), so accounting was on my radar heading into college.

I ended up getting my bachelor’s degree in accounting while interning at a CPA firm in Charlotte, NC. After I graduated, I continued working there for the next three years, which gave me a lot of valuable real-world experience.

By the end of that time, I knew tax wasn’t for me—but I absolutely loved working with small businesses, and I loved entrepreneurship, so I decided to start my own bookkeeping company.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It certainly hasn’t been all smooth sailing. Over the years, I worked several part-time jobs on the side while building up my client base. It was also difficult to land those first few clients.

I’m a bit of an introvert, so getting out, networking, and talking to potential clients felt very unnatural at first. I actually really enjoy connecting with other business owners now, but in the beginning, I had to push myself well outside my comfort zone.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We help small businesses scale and make informed decisions through outsourced bookkeeping and financial operations support.

Business owners typically come to us when their company is outgrowing the DIY phase and they need deeper insight into their finances. Here are a few ways we’ve helped real clients recently:

Set up and maintain QuickBooks Online for a growing electrical company, giving them the ability to invoice jobs and review their financials monthly

Cleaned up a full year of messy books for a rental property owner so they could provide clean financials to their CPA for tax preparation

Helped a salon owner build historical financials to support securing a new lease for their physical location

The thing I’m most proud of is how long our clients stay with us. My very first client—who I got from door knocking in 2017—is still with me today. That tells me we’re delivering real value.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love connecting with business owners, whether it’s as a potential client or just to hear their story and learn from their experiences. I’m always open to grabbing coffee or hopping on a video call.
