Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy Cawley.
Mindy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Vintage MC in 2014 with a booth in an area antique mall. I saw a need for authentic mid-century modern furniture and home decor when we moved into a 1940s bungalow and couldn’t find period furniture for it in Frederick. We just to travel to DC to find anything and I could see there was an opportunity to bring this style of furniture to Frederick.
In 2017, I opened my first brick and mortar shop and in late 2020, I moved into our current 3500 sq. Ft shop in the heart of downtown Frederick.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t think any small business owner has a smooth road especially after more than a decade in business but I’ve been pretty fortunate in that may of my challenges were short lived and ended up making Vintage MC a stronger business. COVID was probably our biggest challenge since we had to close our doors to customers. But our community really stepped up and supported us with online sales and we ended up having a terrific year, so much so that we moved into a much larger and more prominent location at the end of the year.
As you know, we’re big fans of Vintage MC . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Vintage MC is a brick and mortar retail store in downtown. We specialize in authentic mid-century modern furniture and hone decor with a focus on Danish modern furniture that we purchase in Denmark and import to the US. Most of the furniture we sell has been professionally refinished by our in-house refinishing artists. We also carry a curated selection new retro gift and decor.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am always open to be opportunities so I would say I am a risk taker. Traveling to Denmark in 2018 to find vintage suppliers for our Danish furniture and figuring out how to ship it by sea container was certainly a challenge that paid off in a huge way.
