Exploring Life & Business with Matt Frye of Broadleaf Tobacco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Frye.

Hi Matt, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Broadleaf Tobacco started with a simple idea: create a place where people could slow down and actually enjoy something well-made.

Cigars are the anchor, but Broadleaf was never meant to be just a cigar shop. From day one, the goal was to build a community space—one rooted in craftsmanship, education, and conversation.

The name “Broadleaf” comes from one of the most traditional cigar wrapper types, known for depth, character, and patience. That philosophy carries through everything we do: curated inventory, staff who are trained to guide rather than sell, and events that bring people together—whether it’s a pipe night, a whiskey tasting, or a simple evening in the lounge.

We’re intentionally not a volume or discount shop. Broadleaf focuses on quality, relationships, and experience. Customers aren’t just buying a product; they’re buying into a place where time matters and where they feel known.

In a world that’s moving faster and more digital every day, Broadleaf exists to preserve something analog and human—good tobacco, good drinks, and good conversation.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been anything but a smooth road. DOGE, government shutdowns, and the bumps that accompany any new business have thrown one barrier after another in our path. Nonetheless, we have persevered and are doing our best to offer the best cigar lounge experience in our area.

As you know, we’re big fans of Broadleaf Tobacco. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Broadleaf Tobacco is a premium cigar and pipe tobacco shop built around craftsmanship, education, and community. While cigars are at the core of what we do, Broadleaf was intentionally designed to be more than a retail space. It is a place where people can slow down, learn, and enjoy products that reward patience and attention to detail.

Broadleaf specializes in curated premium cigars, pipe tobacco, and complementary experiences such as tastings, educational events, and in-store programming. The focus is not on carrying everything, but on carrying the right things—products selected for quality, consistency, and character. Staff are trained to guide customers based on taste, experience level, and occasion rather than pushing trends or volume.

What sets Broadleaf apart is the emphasis on experience over transaction. The shop is not discount-driven or volume-oriented. Instead, it prioritizes relationships, knowledge, and a welcoming environment where newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts alike feel comfortable asking questions and exploring. Education plays a central role, whether through informal conversations at the counter or structured events that deepen appreciation for tobacco, spirits, and craftsmanship.

Brand-wise, Broadleaf is most proud of the community it has built. Customers don’t simply shop there; they return, engage, and participate. That sense of belonging—combined with consistency, trust, and a clearly defined point of view—is the foundation of the brand.

What readers should know is that Broadleaf exists to preserve something increasingly rare: an analog, human experience built around quality, conversation, and care. The brand stands for slowing down, choosing well-made things, and enjoying them in good company.
