Hi Maria, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Photography has been my passion for over two decades—what started as a creative escape turned into my life’s purpose. I even went back to college to earn my second degree in professional photography, knowing I wanted to make a real impact through portraiture.
Like many photographers, I explored it all—weddings, maternity, families—but high school seniors became my true niche. For the past seven years, I’ve been dedicated almost exclusively to photographing seniors, and it’s been the most fulfilling experience. Capturing this exciting milestone, helping teens see their confidence, beauty, potential, and creating unforgettable experiences for them and their families brings me so much joy.
Beyond seniors, I also help small business owners align with their personal brand, build industry credibility, and create consistency across social media through headshot and branding photography. I love working with entrepreneurs to help them show up confidently and connect with their audience.
Education and mentorship are also an integral part of my business, allowing me to guide fellow photographers—especially those just starting or who feel stuck in a season of their business—to build thriving, purpose-driven businesses. Sharing my knowledge and seeing others grow is just as rewarding as capturing images.
For me, photography isn’t just about pictures—it’s about impact, transformation, and creating something truly meaningful.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While the road wasn’t always fast, every step has been worth it. I’ve always been passionate about learning, and even after earning my degree in professional photography, I committed to continuously investing in my growth. Studying under some of the best in the industry has allowed me to refine both my craft and my business.
One of my biggest challenges was building the confidence to step into the luxury market—knowing my worth, pricing my services accordingly, and creating a business model that aligned with my vision. So many small business owners struggle with self-doubt and comparison, and I was no exception. But once I embraced my value and the unique experience I provide, everything changed.
Another pivotal moment was making the bold decision to niche down and focus exclusively on high school seniors. After years of photographing maternity, newborns, and families, this shift required a full rebrand—an investment that, to this day, has been the most impactful move I’ve made. It wasn’t easy, but it gave me the clarity, direction, and success I had been working toward.
Looking back, every challenge was an opportunity for growth, and I hope my journey inspires others to trust the process, invest in themselves, and step into their full potential. Most of my education focuses on providing confidence-boosting strategies for photographers who know they are ready to take the leap but are scared and held back by limiting beliefs which we all struggle with.

What are your plans for the future?
The future of Maria Ortiz Photography is so exciting, and I can’t wait for what’s ahead! While I’ll continue working with my amazing high school seniors and branding clients, I’m also growing the education side of my business in a big way. Right now, I’m creating a comprehensive course for photographers who are ready to scale their business, attract dream clients, and build something they truly love. I know firsthand what it’s like to feel stuck or unsure of how to grow, and I want to help photographers break free from that cycle—so they can wake up every day excited about their business while actually having the freedom to enjoy life.
I’m also looking forward to speaking at more conferences across the country, sharing my journey and helping photographers gain the confidence to charge what they’re worth and build a business that supports the life they want. Teaching and mentoring have become such a huge passion of mine, and I love seeing others step into their full potential. Even with all these exciting changes, I’ll still be serving my senior and branding clients, continuing to create those one-of-a-kind, luxury experiences. There’s so much ahead, and I can’t wait to see how this next chapter unfolds!
