Today we’d like to introduce you to Malia Schreiber
Hi Malia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was in my early 20s, I worked in sales for several small businesses because my parents were small business owners and I just couldn’t relate to large corporate culture. When you work for a small business you end up pulling your weight wherever you can, so I often found myself handling social media marketing on top of my standard sales responsibilities. Since I was normally one of the youngest on my team, this task came much easier to me than other people who might’ve been assigned it and I ended up having a really good time doing it. It wasn’t until my son‘s taekwondo instructor asked me to take some pictures each week and put them on their Facebook page since I was there anyway that I realized I could make some extra money doing it. That tae kwon do studio offered me $150 per month to run their Facebook accounts and I remember leaving that practice so excited that my son and I walked up and down Main Street and went into every business asking if they needed help with their social media. Within a few weeks, I had enough clients that I could quit my full-time job and focus completely on this venture. This was one of those things that I really had to figure out as I went, and it was super challenging for the first two years I was working 15 hours a day as a single mom and struggling to not only figure out how to run a business, but how to be a good marketer. I taught myself how to build websites, how to create email newsletters, and how to edit video content. Eventually, I was lucky enough to find the incredible people that make up my team today and we were able to expand throughout the entire country and internationally.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, it’s a very smooth road right now with very little potholes or traffic. However, the beginning was a very difficult road to navigate. I came in with almost no formal training in this field and no real idea on how complex it is to start and maintain a successful company. I’ve learned innumerable lessons along the way about the best ways to market your business online, accounting, managing other people, and just what it means to be part of our community. We’re only seven years in, so I’m still anticipating lots of lessons to learn along the way, but I’m very grateful for a team that is flexible enough to navigate the nuances of this lifestyle with me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Millennial Marketing, LLC.?
While our company offers a lot of services that are similar to our competitors, we are set apart in a few different ways. For example, we’re a completely remote company. We meet all of our clients virtually and pride ourselves on being easy to reach. We offer social media management, content creation, website design and management, email newsletters, video editing, and more. Business owners that meet us can easily tell us apart from our competitors because of the way we handle our relationships. We’re not interested in stuffy meetings and using technical words that our clients don’t understand. It’s not uncommon for us to say “This isn’t working as well as we’d like. Let’s try something else.” We want to build friendships with our clients and stay a part of their business strategy and their lives for years to come. We are the kind of company that you can call and say “I don’t know what the hell this means. Explain it to me like I’m a five-year-old.” We also prideto ourselves on our flexibility. We understand that you’re navigating the growth of your company the best you can and things chang. We want to be there to pivot and grow with you. As the owner, I’m most proud of the brand being inclusive and accepting of all types of people and businesses and attracting a type of clientele that feels the same.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The hardest and most valuable lesson I’ve learned throughout this process of owning a business is to lean into delegation. If you trust your team and treat them well, they will treat your business (your baby) like their own. It took me a full two years to delegate almost anything at all and then another two to learn how to delegate well. The last three have been the easiest work years of my life with some of the best return investment I’ve ever made.
