Exploring Life & Business with Julia Nauer of Sort & Style

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Nauer.

Julia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started out over a decade ago in merchandising and buying for women’s apparel and have worked for large global retail companies as well as smaller local specialty stores. I had always wanted to start my own company and opening a boutique seemed like the natural route to take. But, when the pandemic hit and I had some extra time on my hands I began aggressively editing my closet and shopping very strategically.

Although I enjoyed spending a lot of time on my own closet, I realized that for most people a closet clean out is not as exciting or can lead to negative and overwhelmed feelings. I recognized that this could be a service that other women could benefit from. I registered Sort & Style as an LLC shortly after!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
At the beginning of starting a business, there is just so much that you don’t know. From SEO, building your website, setting up an LLC, social media, pricing, etc. There’s a lot to learn beyond just servicing and acquiring clients.

But there is nothing that you can’t figure out from Google or a trusted source who’s been there! The first few months included a lot of Google searches, Youtube tutorials, and calls with advisors that were able to guide me when I hit roadblocks.

As you know, we’re big fans of Sort & Style. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Sort & Style is a personal styling service for everyday life and special events. I offer personal styling, personal shopping, and closet editing services. I’m here to help whether you need a closet cleanout, a new outfit for a special event, or inspiration for new ways to wear what’s already in your wardrobe. I also work with clients to refresh their wardrobes seasonally.

With my previous merchandising and buying experience, I have a strong grasp of trends and trend life cycles as well as an understanding of how to translate trends from the runway into outfits that everyday women and men actually want to wear. I know that not everyone is as enthusiastic about shopping, trends, and editing their closets as I am, but that EVERYONE wants to feel their best! I know how time-consuming it can be to keep up with trends, shop, and pull together outfits. So whether you’re short on time to shop, unsure of your personal style, or just need a boost of confidence when it comes to trends and styling outfits – I’m here to help!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I hate shopping without intention! I’m not someone who loves to browse without knowing what they’re looking for. I need to have a mission or be on the hunt for something specific in order for shopping to be enjoyable for me.

I think part of why I see so many unworn pieces in clients’ closets is because so many people are shopping just for shopping’s sake. They are adding pieces to their closets that they don’t really need or love.

I think that there is a misconception out there that in order to be fashionable, you need to spend a lot of money, have endless options, and never repeat an outfit.

My goal is to teach my clients that you can simplify your closet and the way that you shop and still look and feel fantastic.
