Today we’d like to introduce you to Jan Jefferson.
Hi Jan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my journey with a strong interest in understanding people—what drives behavior, decision-making, and ultimately change. I attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which helped shape both my academic and personal foundation, but my real growth came from working directly in the field.
I spent time working at a large established, multi-state behavioral health organization with a broad continuum of services, where I gained hands-on experience across multiple levels of care, including detox (3.7) and residential treatment programs (3.5 and 3.1) supporting individuals navigating substance use and recovery. That experience was pivotal—it exposed me to the criminal justice population and real-life challenges people face, and the resilience they carry. It became clear to me that effective treatment requires more than just checking boxes—it requires structure, accountability, and genuine connection. This exposure gave me a strong clinical foundation and a well-rounded understanding of how to support individuals throughout the recovery process.
From there, I transitioned into building something of my own. I am now one of the owners of Atrium Life Enhancement Services, alongside my business partner, Miles Bellamy. Atrium was created to provide accessible, structured outpatient services with a focus on helping individuals stabilize, meet requirements, and build a sustainable path forward.
Miles Bellamy is a critical part of Atrium’s foundation and growth. What stands out most about him is his ability to balance vision with execution.
He has a strong understanding of people and brings a level of authenticity that allows him to connect across different backgrounds and experiences. At the same time, he is focused, disciplined, and committed to building something that has long-term impact in the community.
His consistency and commitment to the work have played a major role in shaping Atrium into a program that is both structured and accessible.
Today, we work closely with clients who are often involved with the court system, helping them navigate both recovery and responsibility. Our goal has always been to create a program that is not only compliant, but impactful—where clients feel supported, but also held accountable.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road.
One of the biggest challenges has been building a program from the ground up while navigating the complexities of the behavioral health system—licensure, compliance, insurance, and establishing credibility in a highly regulated space.
There’s also the challenge of perception. Many people underestimate outpatient care, but in reality, it requires a high level of structure and consistency to be effective. Balancing client needs, administrative demands, and business operations has been a constant learning process.
Additionally, working with individuals who are navigating trauma, legal issues, and substance use requires emotional resilience. You have to be able to show up consistently, even when progress is slow.
However, those challenges have also reinforced why this work matters. Seeing clients stabilize, regain control, and move forward makes every obstacle worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Atrium Life Enhancement Services ?
Atrium Life Enhancement Services is an outpatient behavioral health program that provides substance use treatment and support services, including DUI/DWI education and ongoing counseling in a structured, supportive environment.
While we do work closely with individuals navigating the legal system, probation, or court-ordered requirements, our services are not limited to that population. We also support individuals who are seeking help on their own-whether they are struggling with substance use, co-occurring mental health challenges, or simply recognizing that they need additional structure and support to move forward.
One area we specialize in is guiding clients through the DUI/DWI process from start to finish. This includes assessments, education, and ongoing support, while helping clients understand expectations, stay compliant, and avoid further legal complications. We aim to make what can feel like an overwhelming process more manageable, while also addressing the underlying behaviors that led to it.
What sets Atrium apart is our balance of structure and person-centered care. We focus on accountability, consistency, and practical life application—not just theory. Clients are expected to engage, participate, and take ownership of their progress, while also receiving guidance and support along the way. Our approach is practical, consistent, and focused on real-life application-not just theory.
Brand-wise, we are most proud of creating a program that is both professional and accessible. We’ve built Atrium to be a space where individuals feel respected, supported and challenged to grow. We emphasize flexibility through virtual and in-person options, and we prioritize creating a safe, judgement free environment.
At the end of the day, we want readers to know that Atrium is here to help. Whether someone is navigating a court requirement, facing challenges with substance use, or dealing with co-occurring mental health concerns, we are committed to helping individuals stabilize, take accountability, and move forward in a meaningful way.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that you have to be willing to build before you see results.
In the beginning, there are no shortcuts—you have to learn the systems, understand the regulations, and be consistent even when things feel slow.
I also wish I understood earlier how important relationships are. Building connections with other professionals, community resources, and referral sources is just as important as the work itself.
Most importantly, stay grounded in your purpose. This field requires patience and resilience, and if you lose sight of why you started, it becomes easy to burn out.
