Exploring Life & Business with Gigi Ajavon of HPS Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gigi Ajavon.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I became interested in counseling therapy after helping one of my mentees in 2010 through a suicide attempt crisis. I was not trained or educated but I had instincts. I changed my major shortly after from Nursing to Psychology, then later to Human Services with a minor in psychology. I was working for white folks but never really felt like I was home. I either did not like the way clients were being treated or the practices at the workplace. This is how I created Holistic Psychohealth Services LLC Doing Business As HPS Counseling in May 2019. I started working for myself full-time in October 2020 after some experiences with racial slurs at work.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It is has been quite a challenging road. The minimum I work is 80 hours a week, my average is about 95 hours a week. From a very full caseload to teaching at the university, to my administrative duties as a CEO, my role as a mom and wife, and my many other hats that I wear. Sometimes, I don’t even get paid because insurances don’t often pay you on time, and sometimes, they don’t pay at all for services rendered. It’s painful. There has been many mistakes with lessoned learned.

We’ve been impressed with HPS Counseling, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
HPS Counseling is a client-oriented practice. We put your well-being first and together we work on and identify what solutions will work best for you, your lifestyle, and your healing/ change journey. We provide a variety of services with tools ranging from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic, Solution Focused Therapy, Feminist Therapy, Acceptance, and Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Reality Therapy, Mindfulness, Meditation, Yoga, Natural/Holistic based (aromatherapy, holistic medicine, meditative sounds, nutrition, and natural oils) and spirituality.

We currently provide medication management, counseling services for individuals, couples, and families, life and holistic coaching (out of pocket fees). We have 3 interns, 4 contractors, and 5 employees including myself. We also sell vegan and clinically tested CBD products, Thorne vitamins, and we are in the process of selling our own holistic herbs, roots, barks, sage, and palo santo.

I am most proud of being able to pay my employees fair and livable wages, rare for our field. We also offer 401K, tuition reimbursement, and 12 days PTO.

We are different because we see the clients for who they are, not their diagnoses. We pride ourselves in treating or addressing their symptoms. Treatment plans vary from client to client even with the same diagnoses because of their life experiences and background. No two human being is the same. We are here as co-pilots in their healing journeys. We guide them, we help them identify tools, but only their inputs can create the output they desire.

What matters most to you? Why?
Equality and equity matter the most to us at HPS. It’s not just therapists’ availability. It’s also, everyone being able to afford access to counseling and mental health services.
