Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Nargis Jordan.
Hi Dr. Nargis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved caring for others. As a child, I would usually pick the “play doctor kits”, and pretend to look after my parents and siblings. Little did I know, that was the beginning of my journey toward becoming a Dentist and caring for the greater community.
This passion, along with notable support and encouragement from my family and mentors, helped me to focus and apply myself during my years as a college student at Trinity Washington University, and later a dental student at Meharry Medical College.
Fast forward to the present day, this passion, dedication, and support motivated me to open my own dental practice in order to have greater autonomy and reach in my practice of dentistry. It remains with me today, and inspires how I care for each of my patients.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Certainly not. In college, some of my science and mathematics courses were challenging. Additionally, I am naturally more introverted, and as an adolescent, I was shy.
This was the first time in my life I remember realizing the gap between where I was, and where I wanted to be, as well as the steep learning curve that lied before me.
This insight motivated me to ask for help when I needed it from my teachers, family and mentors. It also encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and volunteer at the Washington Hospital Center, Habitat for Humanity, and soup kitchens. It was in part why I participated in college events, and decided to become a tutor in the courses I had mastered.
We’ve been impressed with Premium Family Dentistry, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Premium Family Dentistry we offer general dental care to adults, adolescents, and young children.
We treat our patients like our family members, and understand that going the extra mile is what it means to care for someone. One of the ways I do this is being patient, gentle, and staying in touch with my patients’ circumstances in life. This allows me to understand how their situation impacts their health and how I should adapt their care, so that they receive the best care possible. Another way I do this is by practicing life-long learning and educating myself on different dental and business topics, as well as laws. Doing this helps me be a better doctor and manage my practice more effectively.
This sets the example of care that our dental team practices, and the ambiance our patients experience.
I am incredibly honored to be a part of a dental team that cares for a wide variety of patients, from the elderly to infants, and those with special needs. I also delight in our ability to provide a variety of finance options, so that cost is not a barrier to care.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Humility is important, for everything that we know, there is always something that we don’t. The goal is growth towards excellence. Stepping outside one’s comfort zone, provides the opportunity to learn from anyone and anywhere.
Ask those who know. Specifically, seek out advice and mentorship from individuals who are what you aspire to be. Their guidance will teach you the best methods to accomplish your goals, with the least amount of mistakes and time wasted. No need to re-invent the wheel.
Evaluate individuals in your own community, first. If you are unable to find a suitable mentor in your community, research, identify and approach individuals who are.
