Today we’d like to introduce you to Delany McCarthy.
Hi Delany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey in music began at just 3 years old, captivated by the sound of my mother’s voice. Growing up in Jamaica, I was deeply immersed in the vibrant cultural traditions that ignited my passion for performance and the arts. When I relocated to the United States in 2007, that launched me into my full love and joy of music and began my discovery phase in becoming a musical artist and established music professional.
While attending Watkins Mill High School in Maryland, I grew deeply involved in the school’s music and theatre programs under the direction and guidance of Mrs. Lisa Itkin, Mrs. Pat Lawrence Bucher, affectionately known as “Mama Buch”, Jamaly Allen, and several other influential mentors. During that time, I became an active student leader within the music department, theatre department, and Black History Month celebrations, performing with the concert choir, show choir, and chamber singers. My dedication to the arts led to numerous honors, including selections for the Montgomery County Honor Chorus, Maryland Junior All-State Chorus, Maryland All-State Senior Mixed Chorus, and the Sounds of America National Chorus. I also received the Golden Voice Award twice and earned medals in the NAACP ACT-SO Competition in Montgomery County, marking an important season of artistic growth, leadership, and recognition.
Today, as a professional recording artist, background vocalist, vocal coach, vocal arranger-producer, vocalist, songwriter, and choir director, I blend gospel, classical, jazz, and contemporary influences to create music that resonates globally. I’ve had the honor of performing for world leaders and on prestigious national broadcasts, sharing the stage with acclaimed artists such as Alex Warren, Babyface, and Cynthia Erivo. My notable performances include appearances on PBS, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the MTV Awards, allowing me to reach audiences far beyond U.S. borders.
As a former member of the internationally recognized Aeolians of Oakwood University and a voice student under the guidance of extraordinary vocal instructors including Dr. Julie Moore Foster, Dr. Iris Hankins, and Mr. Bruce Bean, along with additional training from the incomparable Ms. Janice Chandler-Eteme and Dr. Deborah Thurlow, I was inspired to train and mentor singers myself. That passion led to the creation of DSM Voice Studio LLC, where I now guide emerging talent across a variety of genres.
My career took an unexpected yet purposeful detour in 2019 when I enlisted in the U.S. Army as a CBRN Specialist, working in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense. I later became an official Army vocalist, and from 2022 to 2025, served as the only active-duty Army vocalist in Upstate New York. During that time, I seamlessly blended my musical calling with military and community service, earning multiple commendations along the way.
My commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians and music lovers is at the heart of everything I do. Through my work, I strive to make a lasting impact both nationally and internationally, inspiring others to embrace the power of music.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey hasn’t been smooth. I’ve faced significant financial hurdles that forced me to sacrifice many opportunities, and I’ve battled depression, anxiety, and self-doubt along the way. During those tough times, I leaned on my faith in God for strength and guidance, trusting in the path He has destined for me, regardless of societal norms or what others might think.
I shifted from a selfless mindset to a more self-full one, realizing that prioritizing my own well-being is essential to effectively help others. Staying disciplined has been crucial, despite the challenges I face in my present reality. Self-belief and self-encouragement became vital during moments of doubt about my success and journey. Life’s experiences have taught me how to navigate the music industry while managing the business and building relationships with integrity. I’m also grateful for the earth angels and mentors who have offered wise counsel along the way.
Music has always been my escape and therapy, and now that I pursue it full-time, it continues to be my source of healing and passion.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, my happiness was rooted in four essential things: God, family, food, and music. I was laid-back and easygoing, never allowing circumstances to disturb my routine. As my siblings and family would say, my playful nature made me a jokester, and I embraced my dramatic side in a positive, creative way. Some of my fondest memories were cooking and dancing with my mom, aunts, and grandmother — moments that brought me joy, allowed me to express my creativity, and taught me how to share love through food. As an empath, I have always cared deeply for those around me, striving to see the best in people and help bring out their potential. Through it all, my faith in God has remained the cornerstone of my life, guiding me since childhood and shaping the person I continue to become.
I would also like to give a heartfelt shoutout to my grandmother, Leanora Cox, and her lineage; my mother, Nadine Alvaranga; my aunts, Vernette Wright and family, and Tracey Vernon and family; Romanie and Lanniel Wilson, my brother-in-law and sister, along with my nieces and nephews; my additional siblings, Spring McCarthy, Moriah Alvaranga, and David Alvaranga; and my entire family. I love you all dearly, and I am deeply grateful for the support, love, and encouragement you have poured into me over the years.
