Today we’d like to introduce you to CJ Canby.
Hi CJ, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up on Chesapeake Bay and have always loved being on the water. I got my first boat at 12 yrs old. After crabbing in summers during college I started my career as a scientist but after 3 years gave it up to become a full time crabber and hunting guide. In 2020 I started doing social media and have continued to raise awareness and expose the public to the alien world I work in. This year Ill be starting my 24th season as a full time crabber.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Every year crabbing is a different set of circumstances and obstacles to overcome. Every year though there is always a time to make your money. Balancing weather, salinity, demand for crabs and prices is what makes each year a challenge to find the best way to make the most money. The only guarantee in crabbing is that no two seasons are ever the same.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a full time crabber who does social media. I highlight what I do everyday on social media and give the public an indepth look at how there crabs are caught and what it takes to get them to there plate.
Any big plans?
I am in the process of passing on the day to day crabbing part of the buisness and getting more into the retail and wholesale side of crabbing. I plan to keep doing social media and growing my platform.
