Exploring Life & Business with Brittny Bagley of BLux Event Rentals & Dècor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittny Bagley.

Hi Brittny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always enjoyed party planning and shopping for party decor. Back in 2017, throne chairs were just starting to become popular in the Baltimore area. I had rented a set from a company that was quite far from me because no one offered them in my area. The delivery fee was outrageous! It dawned on me at that point that event rentals – the high-end rentals you see on Pinterest and at celebrity parties- was a virtually untapped market in the Baltimore area.

I shelved the idea for a bit as a full-time mom and employee. But in 2018, I did more research, found a trusted manufacturer and just decided to go for it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This business is definitely not as easy as it looks. People see the finished product – you know, the gorgeous chairs arranged perfectly around the beautifully decorated table, the lux backdrops adorned with balloons and florals with the client’s name in lights. They don’t realize how much prep work is involved. The loading and unloading of our trucks. The damages, the injuries, the missing items, the late nights and early mornings. I’ve literally shed blood, sweat and tears for this business. And I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way.

In addition to that, as a black woman in business, there are a lot of people who believe that because you are a minority and/or small business, they automatically deserve a discount on your services. Not all but definitely some. In speaking with other black women with businesses, this rings true for so many of us. People love what we offer but devalue our services because we aren’t one of the “big boys”. Well, how do you expect us to become one of them or better if you constantly question our pricing, which is comparable to the “big boys” even though we offer a higher quality?

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
BLux is the first and only black owned-woman owned luxury event rental company operating in Baltimore, MD. My other company Lux Jumpers is the first Modern Bounce House Company in the DMV. My businesses specialize in exclusivity and everything LUX!

We were the first to bring props, such as our full-sized phone booths, to the DMV. We always want to stand out from the competition and venture into the uncharted waters with our offerings. Our customer experience is top-notch. We take great pride in treating our clients and “friendors” with the utmost care, compassion and respect because we’d be nothing and nowhere without them.

What really makes me proud about my business is that people literally dm, text and email saying things like “I saw ‘xyz item’ this weekend at my cousin’s birthday party and I just knew it was from you”. It makes me so proud to be a brand name. To have clients and prospective clients and fans say “that looks like BLux” or “I know where this item was rented from”. It truly warms my heart. And that is exactly why I’m in this business and go so hard.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am a major risk taker. I’ve been told I’m the type to jump out of a plane and build a parachute on my way down. That is me. Because in my mind, what’s the worst that can happen? You fail? There are soooo many lessons to be learned within failure. And I’m not afraid to fail. I’m not afraid of anything, actually.

Quitting my job in August of last year was a major risk. Here I am, a single mom of two, leaving a great paying job for a (then) side hustle. But I knew I could and would do everything possible to win. I have the heart, I have the mindset, I had the dream, which is now my reality. I’m always going to bet on myself because to me, I’m THAT girl (shout out to Sha’Carri Richardson)! I’ve always been an overachiever and a hard worker. I refuse to lose— my boys are counting on me.
