Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Virden.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been drawn to storytelling—whether through marketing or vintage finds. Twin Thrift Vintage started in July 2024 as a shared dream with my twin sister, Jordan.
We grew up in a multigenerational home, surrounded by our mother and grandmother’s antiques and heirlooms, and developed a deep appreciation for the stories behind everyday objects. That love of nostalgia and sustainability is what inspired the shop.
Located in a restored church in Ellicott City, Twin Thrift is filled with a curated collection of vintage, antique, and vintage-inspired pieces. It’s a space for conscious shopping, where people can find one-of-a-kind treasures and reconnect with a piece of the past.
Thrifting isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s an act of sustainability. Every secondhand item you buy diverts waste from landfills, reduces the demand for new production, and supports a more circular economy. Small choices like this can make a big impact.
Everything in the shop is intentionally curated—no clutter, nothing forgotten. Think color-coded glassware displays, seasonal themes, and pieces that feel fresh, not fussy. Whether you’re hunting for a gift, something nostalgic, or just a little pick-me-up, chances are you’ll find it here—often for less than retail.
My path to this moment started in the tech world, where I’ve spent the past decade helping brands tell their stories. I’ve worked with startups and enterprise names alike—like Bitly and Eightfold, and iconic brands like the NFL, Kroger Health, Beyond Meat, Rent the Runway, Marriott, and the Anti-Defamation League. My work spans marketing strategy, communications, and product positioning.
I studied Comparative Literature, Marketing, and Communications—and that blend has always helped me bridge the analytical with the emotional, the data with the story.
Outside of work, I find inspiration in travel—especially to Sicily, Spain, and U.S. National Parks—and in the small moments: a well-worn cookbook, a vintage glass pitcher, or a great product with a clear purpose.
Whether I’m styling a shelf or launching a product, it all comes back to the same thing: finding meaningful, creative ways to tell a great story.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road—but I don’t think the best ones ever are.
On the professional side, working in tech—especially with startups—means constantly adapting. Teams shift, priorities change, and sometimes the work you’ve poured your energy into gets scrapped overnight. There’s a level of emotional resilience required to stay grounded and creative when things are moving fast (or falling apart). It taught me how to be both strategic and scrappy, to ask better questions, and to keep a sense of humor no matter how chaotic things get.
On the personal side, starting a small business like Twin Thrift Vintage has been equally rewarding and humbling. There’s the joy of building something meaningful—but also the reality of long hours, unpredictable foot traffic, and the emotional weight of trying to grow something rooted in both passion and purpose. It’s one thing to have a vision and another to actually bring it to life with limited resources and no guarantees.
But those bumps along the way have shaped how I work, how I lead, and how I show up—for clients, customers, and myself. I’ve learned to trust the process, ask for help, and celebrate the small wins. And I’ve learned that success doesn’t always look linear—it looks like progress, persistence, and the people who show up along the way.
We’ve been impressed with Twin Thrift Vintage and Virdical, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I run two businesses: Twin Thrift Vintage and Virdical, a marketing consultancy.
Twin Thrift Vintage is a curated vintage and antique shop located in a restored church in Ellicott City, MD. We specialize in fun, fresh vintage finds—from colorful glassware and mid-century barware to retro planters and quirky seasonal décor. Everything is handpicked and styled to feel playful and inspiring, not cluttered. We’re known for our color-coded displays, creative styling, and for helping customers find pieces that reflect their personality. Whether someone’s after a conversation starter, a nostalgic throwback, or a cool accent for their home, we’ve got something for them. We’re most proud of creating a space that feels exciting, approachable, and joyful.
Virdical is a marketing consultancy where I help startups and growing businesses define their story, position their product, and bring it to market with clarity and confidence. I specialize in messaging, positioning, and go-to-market strategy. In addition to my work in the tech world, I also support small businesses in the local community—offering marketing guidance that helps them stand out and connect with the right audience.
At the core of both businesses is the same mission: helping people express themselves—through their brand, their space, or their story.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Curiosity.
It’s the thread that runs through everything I do—whether I’m helping a business sharpen its messaging or sourcing the perfect vintage piece for the shop. I’m constantly asking questions, looking deeper, and trying to understand what makes something (or someone) stand out. That curiosity helps me spot stories others might miss, connect with people more meaningfully, and bring fresh, creative ideas to the table—whether I’m working with a client or styling a shelf.
