We recently had the chance to connect with Drew Stephens and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Drew, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I’ve been trying to travel more as of late and that has been really fulfilling. Exploring new places and seeing new things is great for the Mind, Body & Soul.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Drew from Drew Stephens Productions. I’m a DMV/Baltimore based Creative with a love for Art, Creativity & Collaboration. I offer Photo, Video, Video Editing & Media Consulting Services to businesses and individuals.
I’m also an avid Street, Architecture & Nature photographer.
I apply a Creative adaptive approach, a balance of planning and adapting to make the best possible product. Being open to change, new ideas and methods allows you reach new audiences.
I’m currently working on some passion projects, documentaries & a Mixed media project involving AI that I’m currently doing and really excited about.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I remember being a senior in high school and I entered this art competition with a mixed media piece I made in HS. I won the contest. I remember being kind of shocked but also realizing the power of art, visuals and that art can carry powerful messages. It was a big turning point for me, I went all in on my creativity.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes!
I can recall finally finishing college after 3 major changes, trying to figure out my place in the world. Every job I applied for I received. No response, I was attempting to network at my job at the time and nothing was really coming together. It was one of the first times I really felt like maybe this won’t work out. Money was tight and I had to sell my camera and lens. Which truly crushed me but it had to be done.
Fast forward about 3 months later I found one of my first Mentors who really helped me get on the right track. Taught me things, let me be a PA on shoots, let me get involved in productions, I even did a mini series (wasn’t released unfortunately) about the creative jobs at the company. I had full creative control, I made a deck and presented the idea. My confidence surpassed any level I was at previously. That time taught me to stay the course & keep going.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think they would say Creativity, fellowship, enjoying life, following your dreams and supporting the people you care about.
My friends have supported me on my Creativity journey without any hesitation. So whenever possible I love to give back to them.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If immortality were real, what would you build?
I would build a creative collective that supports young people and rising artists in all media types. Being a creative is hard, having a space to work on your idea, get feedback, screen the idea, fail with grace. All of those things are important and for some people is out of reach. Giving access to space, equipment, mentorship and support to young people, to follow their dreams is paramount to securing a Great future.
