Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Cooper.
Hi Veronica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Since I was a child, I have always been told, “Follow your dreams, Trust your Gut, and Make No Excuses” Although I fail from time to time to trust my gut like most people my age, I always have followed my dreams and made no excuses for the things I wanted. Born in Las Vegas, NV I graduated High School at age 15 which gave me a head start on my goals. I started my career in Fashion Photography. This gained me networking at a young age allowing me to help be a part of the startup for the Las Vegas Fashion Council. This was a huge deal at the time because I was only 17. At age 19 I was introduced to two up-coming rappers who bartered me recording studio time in exchange for shooting their cover artwork. I agreed although I didn’t have much musical experience at the time; Just thought it would be a fun experience. They gave me a beat, I wrote to it, I put the headphones on and my whole life changed from that day forward. Something about hearing my voice back in those headphones just gave me this confidence I hadn’t felt. Playing the song for friends and family and them looking at me like This is you? was just a feeling I couldn’t shake, and I enjoyed it so much. Over the next few years, I started to leave the fashion world and move into the music entertainment industry.
I put out my 1st mixtape “Where’s Vee” on September 9th of 2017. I used my creativity to create a marketing plan that honestly was unheard of at the time. I wanted to bring back that nostalgia of the mixtape era but update it with a modern twist. So, my mixtape had limited copies on USBs that were shaped to look like cassette tapes. I gave a few out at big events around the city and before I knew it, I was selling them out of my car everywhere I went. I had a successful album release party that brought out some of the best artists I knew in the city at the time. All this legwork and networking garnered my mixtape to reach the Billboards in October. At the time billboards had charts that measured growth by region. I peaked at Number 2 for Mountain- Heatseekers for 3 weeks. I went on to tour throughout the country and opened up for artists like Lyfe Jennings and Trina, performing at festivals like Music by the Lake in Ohio, Atlanta Hip-Hop day, and Reno Music Day. I mean I was able to go places I never even dreamed of going to.
I ended up moving to LA to further my career. There I was able to truly tap into songwriting and track referencing. I got the opportunity to do tracks for Lizzo and Cardi B just to name a few. I was able to host my own Music Artist Interview Show on Facebook Watch. I was recently invited to become a member of the recording academy, which was a dream come true. They have an amazing community that I’m so glad to be a part of.
In 2020, I dropped my 2nd project “Sugar and Spice” which lead to some the singles like “Proof is in the Pudding” to chart on Apple Music and iTunes peaking at #2 in Canada & #7 in the Uk as well as “Queens” which charted in the top 100 on the hip-hop charts.
After 2 1/2 years and some major life changes both mentally, physically, and spiritually I am happy to announce I am currently working on my 3rd project to be released sometime in 2023.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been many challenges since I began this journey. From consultants that scammed me, bad management, and budget wasted on areas that were unnecessary again due to the 1st two issues. I fractured both my ankles during my 7-year career. That’s definitely made me miss some great opportunities. Being a woman in a male-dominated field has its own challenges. You definitely have to walk into rooms with your head high, ears opened, and your mind clear so people take you seriously. I have been denied opportunities because of my look, style, and. or branding. Which I am happy to see is slowly changing throughout the industry. I think they are starting to see that consumers are loving real over fake facades more and more.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When it comes to the music industry, I am a music artist, songwriter, and director. I write for various genres such as hip-hop, pop, soul, and even EDM. I directed every one of my music videos as well as filmed and directed several other artists over the years.
When I reached the billboards at that time that was my proudest accomplishment. I felt like wow I did something. Nowadays I am most proud of the people I have had the opportunity to meet; If that makes sense. There have been moments when I wanted to walk away then I would meet people who told me how I inspired them and that is what drives me to keep going. I am so proud knowing that I helped someone even just a little in their life.
I don’t know what sets me apart from others, but I do know I genuinely put my all into everything I do. I love this life I have created. Through the bad and the good!
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Family and Positive thinking make me the happiest!
My family means everything to me. They keep me grounded when I start to lean, they keep my focus when I start to stray, and they love me even on days when loving myself may seem hard. Honestly, I am so blessed to have the family I have. I have many siblings to call upon and parents that are supportive unconditionally.
I started working on positive thinking over the past year and the way you are able to manifest things into fruition is absolutely mind-blowing. I refuse to compare myself to others rather in career paths, life choices, etc. I look at myself in the mirror and remember all I have accomplished so far and knowing that if I focus more on myself, I can spend less time in someone else’s business which means I can continue furthering myself! My goals and what I see success as is different than the next so comparing our lives just doesn’t make sense. It also leads to a thing called personal freedom. We cannot be happy unless we determine our own fate and are left to make our own choices. We have to live for ourselves to find true happiness.
