Daily Inspiration: Meet Tiaret Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiaret Mitchell.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been a creative. Specifically for tattooing, I started playing around with stick and pokes pretty young. I believe I was 12. Tattooing and body modifications had always spiked my interest, even as a young child. Once I turned 15 I started getting tattooed, then that eventually lead to me meeting the first black female tattoo artist I’ve ever met at 16.

Seeing someone who looked like me do something I could only dream of inspired me to start doing it too. So at 16 my senior year of high school, I convinced my counselor to give me a half day schedule since all of my credits were out the way. Little did she know it was so I could focus on teaching myself how to tattoo.

From there, ever since, I’ve found nothing but passion and appreciation for the art. That leads me to where I am today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smoothness is what I paved for the road. Personally, I try not to take things personal. I don’t think anyone’s road is completely smooth, but I try not to fixate on the bumps. If there is an enormous bump then I address it and move around it.

Some of the biggest struggles I will say were people not taking me seriously at first because of my age and my race. The tattoo industry is a pretty racist industry (but honestly what industry isn’t). I am 19, I’m Black, and I’m feminine presenting. However, I just kept working on my craft. I knew if I focused my energy on creating that it would pay off and be recognized.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in abstract, experimental art. I am known for pushing the boundary when it comes to tattooing. I’m also known for my usage of colored inks on black skin.

I am most proud of the perseverance I’ve had along the way. I kept going no matter who or what or when, I just kept going. The drive I had I wouldn’t ease off of the gas for any reason. I had a mission I knew I had to fulfill. I am also most proud of the art I created. I created pieces I never imagined I could create.

What sets me apart honestly is my art in itself. My tattooing art is nothing really ever seen before, and it goes beyond the tattoo itself. I also love colors and I use them as much as I can!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
A lot of people still do not know how young I actually am. I’m 19 years old. lol!

Also, I play piano, I’ve played for about 14 years. I have always found a deep love for music.
