Daily Inspiration: Meet Symone Gaither

Today we’d like to introduce you to Symone Gaither.

Hi Symone, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I moved from Baltimore to Hanover just as I was beginning high school. At a young age, my mother taught me how to sew. When I was part of a dance group in Baltimore City, my mother would assist with the dance costumes. This grew my interest, even more, to learn how to sew and create garments.

Fast forward, after receiving my Bachelors Degree in Fashion Design at The Art Institute of Philadelphia, I began to Make prom dresses part time. Prom Season became a huge selling point towards my business. Where I was later on gaining clientele in Philadelphia, Hanover, and in the DMV area.

I worked mostly out of a second bedroom to fulfill orders, but then the pandemic set in, and many of the proms were canceled.
I took “a leap of faith” and decided to head back to Hanover, Pa to open the Amelia Symone Couture Bridal & Evening Wear shop in December of 2020.

Here at Amelia Symone, we specialize in couture gowns where every gown is made in-house at our storefront at 123 Baltimore Street Hanover, Pa. It is one of the very few Black-owned businesses that has resided in downtown Hanover. During your bridal appointments, We are able to discuss the different requested style concepts with our clients and have them choose from different fabrics and materials to create their very own design.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
With the pandemic, most businesses have had many challenges by being able to keep their doors open. However, I am very grateful that I was able to survive the pandemic by being able to open a storefront location for my brides and their bridal party to come and get the Amelia Symone experience.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
With our business mainly being made to order, we are able to provide gowns for any special occasion for women sizes 0-24. I am proud that we are able to create such an experience to make a bride’s dreams come true.

We offer the best quality fabrics with hand sewing techniques that are special with every gown being made in-house.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I wouldn’t call it luck. By the grace of God, I am grateful for the amazing talent that he has given to me. I have always remained positive especially when things may not go as planned, and to continue to keep God in my business to make the best business decisions.
