Daily Inspiration: Meet Seyi & Abisola Shof

Today we’d like to introduce you to Seyi & Abisola Shof.

Hi Seyi & Abisola, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Our journey started during the pandemic. It was our wedding anniversary, so we did a trending TikTok dance and posted it on our Instagram page. To our surprise, it got so much engagement. So a couple of weeks later, we decided to do another dance just for fun. Once again, a lot of people engaged with the content. So we thought, why not just keep it up just for fun? We didn’t know it would become a “thing.” We are almost two years later, with lots of intentional content created, and our audience on Instagram has grown from one thousand to 73,000 followers!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth, haha, not at all. It’s been a lot of learning on the fly, and trust me; there’s always a lot to learn. While we started for fun, we soon realized that the visual quality of our videos looked very different than that of others. Next was our audio quality, then the way our Instagram feed looked, and the list goes on and on. We invested in improving our visuals, purchasing better recording equipment, and even just styling ourselves to impress the “gods of Instagram feed.” But all this was fun because we enjoyed putting out great content. The most challenging part was finding the time to balance our social media activities with our jobs and parenting responsibilities. So much goes on behind the scenes of a 30-second Instagram or TikTok video, such as planning the concept, filming, editing, engaging with our online community and with brands, etc.; all this runs into several hours and gets time-consuming quickly.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As everyone knows, Instagram is full of picture-perfect #couplegoal vacations and experiences, but rarely the mundane parts of daily life. We infuse fun and excitement into these so-called “mundane daily experiences” so that people in relationships or those who aspire for one get to see how every moment can be truly special and enjoyable. With every piece of content we post, we try to show how relationships can be fun and beautiful. All of this is driven by our mission to inspire couples to build healthy and happy marriages. And so, we are known for funny and entertaining couple videos that cover a wide range of relatable and personal experiences guaranteed to bring a smile to people’s faces.

Another thing we do, which is quite different from other content creators, is host fun social events that bring people together. Most recently, we hosted a Sip & Paint event with 50 attendees for both couples and singles. It was very entertaining, with lots of mingling, spicy relationship conversations, friendships formed, and people having a good time dancing.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Fun fact, our social media pages used to be private until we took the chance to post our lives to the world, not knowing the feedback we would get. Since then, we constantly experiment with different content concepts, video recording angles, ways of delivery, etc. We see each experiment as a way to discover what can help us best deliver our message. One classic example is a YouTube video we recorded telling a lady’s difficulties that led to the loss of her unborn child; rather than narrating this story, we chose to act it out with me as the lady and my husband as the therapist she confided in. I still get chills when I watch it. But the biggest risk we’ve taken recently is hosting events for our community, especially at a time when almost no content creator in our niche does the same. When planning our first event for June 2022, we had no idea if people would pay to experience a fun night out with us. Yet we proceeded, and it was such a huge success that it surpassed our imagination. We got so much great feedback and incorporated it into our next event, which also sold out. But even if the first event flopped, it would still have been a risk worth taking, with many lessons to learn. Now, we are planning something exciting in the coming months, but of course, you’d have to stay tuned to find out what this is.
