Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Fairbanks.
Hi Sam, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was always begging to have the chance to take photos of my family and friends. In high school, this started to open up small opportunities, including photographing a friend’s garage band.
Over the next couple of years, I photographed as a hobby and developed my skills. I absolutely love capturing the spirit of a moment in the photograph – showcasing the same soul that you show up to the shoot with.
Over COVID, I started working extensively with college graduates, which is now one of my specialties. College and graduate school can be a journey and I find it meaningful to help people bottle up those bittersweet memories.
Regardless of who or what I am photographing, I take pride in telling a story about my subject.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Photography is something I have been able to take with me along the way, but it’s not my main career. Likewise, it can sometimes feel impossible to manage and recruit clients. I’ve had to work on slowly building a reputation in Maryland, which required me to branch out a bit. Within this, I found out that I adore photographing courtroom elopements!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in portrait photography – from grads and seniors to families and pets.
I value telling your story – from a love story, a moment of empowerment, to the tenderness of end of life moments, there is a reason you are taking these photos and I want to enclose a bit of the atmosphere in each snapshot.
How do you think about happiness?
Aside from spending time riding horses and walking my dog, I love it when I am able to make people feel comfortable and confident in front of my camera.
One of my biggest goals is to make your experience feel more like friends than a stranger with a lot of expectations. In the moment, I value laughter and flexibility- keeping the lightness that we want to bring to your photos.
My ideal day is one spent at the barn – photographing horses and their riders and then finishing the day with a sunset ride.
