Daily Inspiration: Meet Lakia Diggs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakia Diggs.

Hi Lakia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Being a product of the harshest areas of Baltimore City, it’s still surreal to see my life as it currently is; living my dreams. I began styling neighbor’s hair because I loved the transformation of the hairstyling process. I mean, it also kept a few dollars in my pockets and me off the streets. Each client I styled referred me to their friends and family…and from there, my clientele continued to multiply. So much so that certain periods of time, I had to close my appointment books to new clients. From there, I’ve been blessed to style some of the City’s elite, celebrities and many others.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. I wouldn’t say I had struggles. I’ve had many learning opportunities. For instance, I’ve been styling hair since 11 years old. I’ve learned extremely early the art of customer service, client retention, and budgeting. I’m grateful that back then, when I messed up sometimes, I was given grace because of my eagerness to learn at such a young age. And now, I provide customer service without even realizing it because it’s second nature.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a senior licensed cosmetologist. I create. I educate. I empower. I style hair in cursive. That’s how I describe my artistry. I love to do things to hair that the client may not know their hair can do. Society tends to place women in boxes where we have to behave and look a particular way to be accepted. Creating looks that matches a client’s personality, mood, or journey is so fulfilling to me. Giving them that wider smile, that extra pep in their step. That does it for me. I specialize in scalp care, blowouts and luxury color services. I’m most known blowouts and silk presses.

I am most proud of how I educate clients on their own hair and scalp so they have a better understanding of what they need in the areas of health, nutrition and self-care. Combining that with the topical care I provide, some of their wildest hair goals can come true!

I am different from other stylists because I wake up each and every single day going to a job that I’ve had my entire life….read that again….I have worked my dream job for 26 years. I get to have fun everyday, style hair, vibe with my clients and be my most creative self. With that, I don’t have most mental and physical hardships that some people have. I strive to remain teachable. My next service is always better than the one before…so constant education, research and personal development has taken my business to great heights.

What are your plans for the future?
Right now, I’m adding two extensions to the TKX (The Kia Xperience) brand. One is a bridal glam team. Because things are kind of normalizing to a degree from COVID, I found that having a team would be very beneficial in the bridal industry. Secondly, I will be available to be booked as a creative director for brand shoots, editorial campaigns and a host of other things.
