Today we’d like to introduce you to Keisha LaRoux.
Hi Keisha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born and raised in the DMV I have always had an affinity for arts and social issues. Early experiments with film photography sparked my photography interest, but I rarely saw the images that represented my authentic experiences.
Photos By Roux was founded in 2020 to document and appreciate the struggles and successes of those who are continuously oppressed. In order to raise awareness and awe of their unique beauty.
The purpose of my photography is to showcase the beauty behind Black people’s genuine experiences, act as an outlet for my love and rage, and protest against an establishment that is constantly attacking those who look like me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While I’ve enjoyed almost every aspect of my developing business, it can be financially taxing not having the resources to produce my best work. However, I’ve been finding creative ways to manage and continue growing my business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The main focuses of my photography are social realism, which I use to document the current mood of the people, and surreal photography which I use to express my current frame of mind creatively.
The two projects I’m most proud of so far is our partnered Re·sil·ience Youth Mentorship which introduced Black boys ages 11-14 to the creative wonders of photography, the healing aspects of journaling, and the financial benefits to NTFs; in order to build resilience in their daily lives. I’m also excited for our 2023 Art and Activism showcase/ political fundraiser to raise awareness to the decrease in DC’s arts and humanities budget.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Consistency and perseverance are most important for my success; my craft will continue to flourish as time goes on so long as I refuse to waiver to the challenges I’m faced with.
