Daily Inspiration: Meet Justin Murdock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Murdock.

Hi Justin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I graduated from Clemson University as a 4x All-American on the Track and Field team, 2x Member of Team USA, Olympic Trials Semi-finalist in 2012, and not to mention, currently the Maryland State record holder in the 55m dash. With that being said, I have strived over the years to be the best at what I do by putting the necessary work in to accomplish what it is that I set my mind to.

Almost 10 years later, I pass on that mindset to the people that I am coaching and mentoring. I believe that you not only have to be competitive in what it is that you do, but you need to have the desire to be the best you can be in whatever respective field that you choose. That is where the Premier brand was born.

Today, the Premier brand strives to be the best in class in regard to service, as well as products. We operate as a track program that offers local high-caliber talent the opportunity to perform on the national stage, we produced 7 All-Americans at the New Balance National meet in Philadelphia during our inaugural year.

Premier also has an arm that produces all-natural soy candles called Premier Collection Co. The goal with Premier Collection Co. is to pay homage to my athletic background, wearing comfortable sweats every day with style, as well as diving into my love for candles. My girlfriend and I would spend tons of money on candles from places like Home Goods and Bath and Body Works until one day I decided to make my own. Now I can create what I want without searching high and low and share that with the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In business, nothing is ever smooth. That’s what makes the journey what it is. At Premier, we have had to pivot and delay projects many times, however, we managed to overcome them. For instance, when creating candles, we had to test out many variations of our product in terms of jar types, wick size, and fragrance load.

We wanted to make sure we delivered the quality that is synonymous with our name, Premier. On top of that, customer acquisition was the next challenge. I have always been known as a “sports guy” so creating candles kind of threw everyone for a loop. However, I remained persistent and determined to deliver high-quality products.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Premier as a brand is not just one thing. We pride ourselves in wearing many hats servicing the community in multiple ways.

With the Premier track program, our goal is to allow young high school-aged athletes to generate exposure to Colleges and Universities through academics and athletics. As a former D-1 All-American athlete, coached by the best in the world, I provide a wealth of knowledge to your athletes and teach them life lessons along the way, specifically, time management and goal setting. In just a year, we have had kids accepted into universities such as Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, North Carolina A&T, and the University of Maryland, just to name a few.

Premier Collection Co. is under the Premier umbrella specializing in products such as candles and athleisure wear.

Premier Collection Co products can be found at The QG located in Downtown Baltimore as well as online.

I would say that I am most proud of the candles, simply because I get to put my touch on every candle I create. Also, it shows my versatility because I am known as an athlete, that is the first thing people think about when they hear my name. Now that I am able to create high-quality candles, I am progressively making my way outside of the box that athletics has put me in.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love how talented people are in Baltimore. If you can look past how the city is perceived, you will meet and see exceptional people throughout the area. I wish people really took the time to see the city and metro area for what it really is. I guess that is what I dislike about it. When I travel and tell people where I am from, all they can really reference is The Wire.
