Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason And Emily
Hi Jason and Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We are folk musicians, Jason Brown and Emily Potter, a guitar and piano duo living in Nottingham, outside of Baltimore. We came together in March 2020 when we fell in love and Emily moved from Utah to create a life with Jason and his two children in Maryland.
During our beginning months as a new couple, Jason and I began to define the musical dream we wanted to build together. Before we met, we both had experience performing in bars, restaurants, and festivals. We realized, however, that although providing music as entertainment was enjoyable, we wanted to expand the dream to specifically serve fellow truth-seekers who know there is more to life than paying bills and conforming to societal expectations.
This is where we began to find our greatest purpose and fulfillment as musicians. Our songs offer our listeners “music medicine”, a phrase that clarifies how we choose to utilize our music as a healing tool. We have defined two intentions for our work:
1) In a world steeped in cynicism, we desire our songs to inspire a celebration of even the smallest joys that life has to offer
2) As a response to personal fears and self-limiting beliefs, our songs are a call to courageously live a sovereign, authentic life
For the last four years, we have written and performed original songs that contain these powerful messages of vulnerability and surrender. We are delighted when we receive the feedback from listeners that our music provided a sense of joy, or the inspiration to make a brave choice.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
FROM EMILY:
I quit my day job in Salt Lake City, Utah in April 2015 to become a musician full-time, before I met Jason. My musical journey took me to 14 countries until I finally rested from my travels in 2019. I was passionate about my work as a singer/songwriter, and went to sleep every night feeling deeply fulfilled.
Then I got very sick.
I was suffering from a combination of life-threatening illnesses. At one point, my body was so inflamed by the Epstein Barr virus, the streptococcus virus, the shingles virus, debilitating eczema, sinusitis, and neurological asthma that it severely compromised my ability to breathe. After moving in with Jason in 2020, I became partially housebound for about two years due to the severity of my symptoms. My care provider at the time admitted to feeling very nervous if I was going to live. I chose to live, and took action for implementing an extremely regimented healing plan.
Healing chronic illnesses, however, required all my musical dreams with Jason to be put on hold. My healing path has been slow, but I am improving every day. Jason and I are feeling a new surge of excitement to revisit the dreams that have been sitting on the shelf for years. We are stepping into those dreams as stronger and healthier versions of ourselves, individually and as a partnership.
FROM JASON:
In the summer of 2016 my whole world changed. After teaching full time for 19 years I was no longer in the classroom. My marriage of 15 years came to an end. I moved into a new home, and in many ways I started my life over. I had to re-examine who I was and who I wanted to be. This included my musical life. I had been playing in cover bands for several years, but the joy in it was slowly fading away. I felt stuck in a musical rut and had no idea how to get out. That is when a friend sent me a link to a Facebook group called “Lightworker Musicians Tribe”. The administrator of this group was none other than Emily! I resonated with Emily and the group immediately and I quickly enrolled in Emily’s mentorship program. This experience changed my life as I was empowered to overcome the limitations I had placed on myself through fear and insecurities. I was able to overcome the self doubt surrounding my ability as a musician and songwriter. I gained the courage to be more vulnerable and open in my songwriting and performances.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We have enjoyed performing at farmers markets, bars, restaurants, house concerts, and private events of all kinds. Our unique male/female vocal harmonies blended with the combination of thoughtfully crafted lyrics is what we have learned people enjoy most about what we offer.
Our approach is to play from the heart to the heart of our listeners. It is our goal to provide a musical experience that taps into the inner child and dreams of our audience and leave them inspired to make them come true.
We are currently bringing our original songs to life in the recording studio and creating our first album together! We are looking forward to sharing the album with folk music appreciators who share our belief that music has the power to create a world more centered in love, compassion, and gratitude.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
FROM EMILY:
Anthony William, the Medical Medium©. Anthony’s books are the source of the information I needed to learn the root cause of each of my chronic health conditions. Conventional medicine was only able to help me suppress symptoms, so I turned to changing my diet and using food as my medicine. Since making these changes, I have been watching my symptoms disappear one by one ever since.
My family supported me, financially and otherwise, when I was too sick to work. I am deeply grateful for their unconditional love.
Jason, my partner. Jason has been cheering me on from the first day we met, even telling me how beautiful I am when I was riddled with eczema from head to toe. I love you, Jason.
My Highest Self is aligned with Light/God/Universe and is present as my personal guide, invested in the cause of embodying who I truly am.
FROM JASON:
I give credit to the universe for inspiring me and guiding me on this path.
I give credit to Emily for breaking me out of my shell and being a constant source of encouragement and inspiration.
I give credit to all the musicians who I have been fortunate enough to play with and learn from.
I give credit to my friends and family who have supported my musical journey all along the way.
