Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalisa Rogers.
Hi Jalisa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with photography began in college, in a film darkroom course. That first photography course sparked something lasting in me – a love for observation and artistic preservation of otherwise fleeting moments. My love for this medium has only grown from there, but those early experiences with film remain at the heart of my work.
Today, I photograph weddings using a hybrid format, combining digital with film. It’s both a creative choice and a way to honor my roots. Film invites a kind of presence that slows me down, makes me more thoughtful, and allows me to capture moments with a softness and sincerity that aligns with how I want people to feel when they look at their images. My work continues to evolve, but my intention has always been the same: honest storytelling, artistic intention, and a deep respect for the beauty of real life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In my early years, I focused so much on the technical side of photography; learning light, composition, and understanding my gear. Over time, my real challenges have come from evolving my artistic voice and vision. Finding clarity in what I want my work to say, and how I wanted it to feel. That’s taken time, experimentation, and a lot of trust in my own instincts. Not to mention the incredible amount of trust my client’s place in my hands.
Another “challenge” was learning how to build strong, intentional relationships with my clients. Photography is incredibly personal, especially in the context of weddings. It’s not just about showing up with a camera, it’s about earning trust, making people feel seen, and creating space for real emotion. That emotional labor can be intense, but it’s also the most rewarding part of what I do.
Lastly, there are the unseen aspects of running a creative business: managing time, setting boundaries, staying inspired despite the constant barrage of “trends” from social media.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a wedding and couple’s photographer specializing in a hybrid approach that blends digital and analog film. My work is rooted in a documentary style with emphasis on honest, emotionally driven storytelling, but I draw inspiration from editorials and fashion forward photographs. My approach embraces messy realities perfection; I aim for presence over perfection.
What sets my work apart is its sense of quiet intentionality. I’m not just documenting events, I’m paying close attention to feeling, timing, light, and energy. My goal is to preserve the essence of a moment in a way that feels timeless and artful, without ever feeling staged. I think that balance between real and refined, between story and style, is what I’m most proud of.
I’m also deeply invested in the experience I give my clients. It’s important to me that people feel fully themselves in front of my camera. That trust and sense of ease allow me to photograph the in-between moments, softness, joy, and the depth. These moments are frequently my favorite gallery highlights.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I think risk is an essential part of creative growth. Every meaningful step I’ve taken in my business, whether it was investing in new gear, shifting my style, or raising my prices, felt risky in the moment. But looking back, those decisions were necessary. Taking risks is how we evolve. It’s how we move from where we are to where we’re meant to be.
Imposter syndrome has always been present in some way, but over time I’ve learned to use it as fuel. I’ve had mentors who reminded me that imposter syndrome often shows up right before you level up—and that it’s a sign you’re pushing into new, meaningful territory. So, instead of letting it hold me back, I treat it as a signal that I’m stretching beyond my comfort zone. That feeling of discomfort usually means I’m on the edge of something important.
At the heart of it, risk-taking is an investment; in myself, in my vision, and in the kind of work I want to create. It doesn’t always feel easy, but it always leads to growth. As a creative, I think the willingness to grow is one of the most valuable things I can hold onto.
