Today we’d like to introduce you to Afi Soul.
Afi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a singer song writer. So, I fell in love with music long before I underetood what was really happening on my life and what it was doing to me. I remember as a little girl sitting on the porch squinting my eyes just enough to let the sun rays shine through and singing songs I would here on the radio.. and the song my mother played. It was the best feeling. I felt emotions i didn;t know how to describe.. I didn;t know whatit was called but I loved the way I felt wehn I was singing. When I got a little older my parents took me to seethe WIZ. I went home and did everything I rememebr on stage, the choreography, the melodies, the hoo lines… Everything.. and my Dad was like… “Do you see this girl?” he was amazed that i rememebr so much.. Im sure I wasnt even 5 yet. I was probably 3or 4 years ol…. fast forwsrdmy first talent show.. I sang Whitney Houston.. and I bbmed.. lol I got stsage fright! I could song anything all over my hiuse ,in class but whn I got on stage I froze! Btur htey gave me another chance in the next schiol assembly. The pirncipal ame and rtalkedto me and she saidshe heard how beautiful I sang andshe wantedto give me another chnce.. Her Name was Ms. Praston and Bunker Hill Elementary… The next time she stiod in front of me at the side of the stage and coached me told me I could do it… I did …I did it! and the rest is history… all this time I havent stopped
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Never been a smothe riad.. never.. I have had doubters telling me I couldnt do it.. especially when I was in my senir year at Howard and grasuated and found out I was preganant with my tiwns.. people said I was washed up.. said no one wants to see me on stage with a pregnant belly. as though bringing life in to tihis workd was notu beautiful.. like It was ugly… But I kept on. I even gave up on myself at times.. becasue of life and life situations.. but each time it seems like God would send someone aound to tell me how much they lovw my music.. my voice.. How much what I sing tuches their soul… that was always a message for me to getup and keep going.

I put my first album “LOVELY” out in 2007.. my first sng;e was re;eased on BETJ Soul Sessions (Bryant Johnson producer) it was called “BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE”. it wen t on to be playe on MTV2 and VH1 SOUL.. it also had some radio adn college radio plays too
Ive been singong in the industry as a recording artidt for over 20 years.
Ive performed all over America, the Carribean and Now in Africa.. I have had air play all overthe workd..
