Daily Inspiration: Meet Ada Portillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ada Portillo.

Hi Ada, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always loved the creative side of marketing, branding, and graphic design. I didn’t find an environment where I could really dive deep into my passions and skills until 2022, when my full-time role came to an end, and I saw it as an opportunity to rediscover myself and step into something bigger.

It got started when a local entrepreneur and friend reached out and asked me to help rebrand their business. It wasn’t just about a logo or a website—it was about rediscovering the business’s voice, audience, and identity. We worked collaboratively, dreaming up big ideas and then bringing them to life in a way that made their new brand exciting.

After successful work with that project, word started to spread quickly, and soon I was getting a steady stream of small businesses and organizations that wanted not just simple projects, but full creative partnership. Within the first year, I had built a portfolio I was proud of, established collaborations with other agencies and creative freelancers, and officially launched as Ada Portillo Agency.

Today, my agency partners with about 30 different brands across the DMV, offering everything from branding and website design to social media content, marketing collateral, photo, video, and campaign strategies.

Faith-founded, people-first, mission-driven, and always creatively visionary. I treat each brand as if it were my own, even if that means saying “no” to projects that don’t align. More often, it means rolling up our sleeves and doing what’s not easy or traditional, but what’s going to elevate that particular business. Whether it’s a startup, a small business, or a large organization, I want every client to feel supported, inspired, and ready to reach new heights.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For me, the biggest challenge was that starting a business wasn’t something I had initially planned out. One client turned into a few. A few projects turned into many. Before I knew it, the demand for services grew so quickly that I was changing the structure of my business every few months.

This also meant I had to wrestle with how to present myself. Was I a freelancer, an agency, a creative? Those times really challenged me to define my identity and be confident in saying, “I’m a creative partner who helps people bring their vision to life.”

I also don’t believe in cutting corners when it comes to service. Every project has to feel right, work well, and truly serve the client’s vision. That sometimes means long nights, multiple rounds of revisions, and pushing myself and my team to think bigger.

Plus, the creative industry is always changing—new tools, new platforms, new ways of doing things. It can be overwhelming, but I’ve learned that constant learning and adapting are part of the job. It keeps us sharp and the work exciting.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our clients know they can rely on my business as a creative partner who is invested in their success. They appreciate that I’ll sit down for coffee to brainstorm, respond to those last-minute “SOS” texts when a need pops up, or give honest feedback when they’re chasing a big idea.

With my background in branding and graphic design, a lot of our focus is on brand development: logos, websites, templates, creative content for marketing purposes, and all the creative touchpoints and visuals that represent a company. But more than just making things “look good,” or “sound good,” our goal is to make sure every project is fully functional, communicates well, and leaves an impact. Our work is intentional. We don’t chase trends for the sake of it. We actually take the time to listen, research, and craft solutions that are built to last. That mix of creativity, strategy, and genuine partnership is what sets us apart and what I’m most proud of.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One memory that really stands out is when I first learned how to sew. When I was about twelve, I took a sewing course at school, and I’ll never forget my first projects: a pincushion, a skirt, and a bag. My parents even bought me my first sewing machine. I loved sketching outfits, experimenting with designs, and bringing them to life with fabric. It was one of the first times I felt that spark of creating something from an idea in my head. I still have that very first pincushion too.
