Conversations with X. Josh Fernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to X. Josh Fernandez.

Hi Josh, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello, I’m Josh. I’m a dad of two amazing kids and life’s blessed more than I deserve. I’ll do anything for them and teach them everything I know. They’re thoughtful, diligent, and kind—thank goodness they take after their mom. I’ve known my wife since we were 15 and we’ve been in an eternal hanging-out status since. I still panic a little when she looks at me funny. I live a life not mine, but entirely theirs.

Photography has been a constant companion since 2002 and I fall in love with it year after year. We’re rarely where we plan to be yet we always find ourselves where we ought to be. I believe life’s imperfections draw us in. Memories define what’s constantly fleeting. This is how photography captivates us and why simplicity and spontaneity work so well. I’m grateful you’re here. If you see anything you like, let’s chat for a bit. We may be on to something.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The greatest challenge this practice has is the constant pursuit of portraying people and moments as they genuinely are. Photography is highly subjective, three people looking at one image may perceive things differently based on biases. The balance between customer satisfaction and an artist’s drive is a precarious ladder to climb. This is how aligning those we choose is important and why I’m not one to say I’m exactly what people are looking for – my work must reach out to you on their own.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love taking myself out of the equation – the images I help create are about you. Sooner than most would imagine, these photographs will be all that’s left of certain moments in our lives. It allows viewers to experience a split second of one’s life after decades upon decades have passed. The images’ worth increases with every passing year, through family life and its changes, with every coming generation. These timestamps may seem initially to be for us but in truth, belong to those who come long after we’ve left.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Connecting with people is an amazing thing. Through this, we could share adventures that we may never experience otherwise. Alongside gaining friends, we are also taught to value what really matters and be careful in choosing our paths. Experience is the best teacher and unfortunate ones leave the best lessons. Gratitude defines character. I hope to see you around.
