Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Marshall.
Hi Suzanne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2000, I left my corporate job and started Whale Works Design. I was looking for an entrepreneurial challenge to harness my artistic flair, technical expertise and business executive training. My previous experience working with advertising, publications and in-house corporate teams gave me the background needed to create logos, brand identities and websites for clients from a variety of industries. My graphic design degree, paired with training in executive leadership and business management, helped to prepare me for managing all of the moving parts of creative projects.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting out, I faced challenges juggling operating a small business while being a mother. I scheduled meetings and studio time around my family’s schedules, sticking to smaller, local jobs, As my children got older, I was able to take on larger projects for bigger clients, and add teaching graphic design classes with UMBC to my resume.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a holistic graphic designer, who goes deep into my clients’ goals, wishes, failures and successes. I specialize in logo design, brand identity design (brand guidelines with templates for all brand assets) and website design. I am proud to be able to work with mostly women who own their own businesses. My clients compliment me on my patience, work ethic and dedication to high quality creative results.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am also a fine artist. I like to work in watercolor, acrylic, pen-and-ink and pastel. I do occasionally get commissions for portraits, nature scenes and custom illustrations — and I would love to have more. Most people are surprised to learn that I am a big fan of womens soccer, having played varsity for my high school, and growing up, I was one of a couple of girls on an all boys team.
