Conversations with She-UnO (Sheun Ogunsunlade)

Today we’d like to introduce you to She-UnO (Sheun Ogunsunlade).

Hi She-unO (Sheun , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in PG County Maryland to Nigerian parents, She-unO began penning raps for class presentations in about the fifth grade. Even through attaining multiple degrees and corporate jobs, he’s always held the same dream of using his voice for impact and seeing art as the perfect vehicle for achieving that. In 2017 he released his debut, official EP Invincible Summer. His latest project (T)here released in March 2024 is rooted in the human experience, defined by the tension between present struggles and desiring to be in a presumed ideal future. He invites you to join him on this journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Naw, it has not been a smooth road at all! One of the largest struggles was with self-doubt and being able to see myself as an artist. I wrestled with waiting for external validation to define who I was and what I thought I was capable of. It felt as though success was a far off, unattainable destination. It’s an ongoing effort for sure, but learning success is and has always been in the journey.

I’ve often felt I was waiting on some big breakthrough or for someone to put me on. The truth is we must learn to put ourselves on in the process, building an internal determination and grit to keep going.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a rapper/songwriter. I started performing and making music in the church from an early age, which has always caused my music and lyricism to be deeply rooted in faith, God and introspection. I believe that music has the power to uniquely communicate truth through story. I strive to be authentically myself in my music and invite listeners to seek to do the same.

I’m most proud of my latest released project (T)HERE, as it was a long held concept that I finally saw come to life. I’m also equally as excited and proud of the music we are currently working on.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I think a very significant part of finding a mentor is being willing to be a mentor to someone else first. A lot of society is centered around what we can take and receive, but we cannot bypass the necessity of learning to give.

I also love the idea of networking being driven by making genuine connections with people as people and not merely base off of what we perceive to be their utility.
