Conversations with Sean Hart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Hart.

Sean, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story has always been about people, places, and moments that shaped me. And today that’s what connects my photography and coaching.

I was raised by the world, really, born in Toronto and spending my formative years in Lyon and Miami. From an early age, I’ve been immersed in different cultures, languages, and ways of seeing life. That gave me a deep respect for diversity and a unique perspective on how people express themselves and tell their stories. I’m a native English speaker, fluent French speaker and also a professional level German speaker.

Football (soccer) was my first love and it took me far across the globe. Austria, France, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Brazil & Australia to name a few. I was fortunate to represent my country as a Canadian youth international and later professionally overseas. That experience wasn’t just about sport, it taught me discipline, teamwork, and the humility of both winning and losing. It also made me understand the intimacy and vulnerability that come with putting yourself out there, whether you’re on a pitch or in front of a camera.

When I stepped into coaching, I wanted to pay that forward by helping young players, boys and girls, grow not just as athletes but as people. Now as a professionally licensed football (soccer) coach, I always come back to the same principles: trust, accountability, and creating a safe environment for people to thrive and be themselves.

Photography naturally became another way for me to celebrate that same raw, candid humanity. What started as a passion 10 years ago, quickly became a way of life and full fledge business about 6 years ago. HARTISTRAW | Where Moments Become Art. I believe the world is bigger than fear and greed and through my lens I try to show those quiet moments that remind us of that. I love capturing people just being themselves, real moments that become timeless memories.

Today, whether I’m coaching a team or behind the lens, my purpose is the same: to create an environment where people feel seen, heard, and understood. When people feel safe to be themselves, I think that’s where the magic happens.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road but I think the bumps have made the journey what it is. I moved around a lot which meant I was constantly starting over or at least it felt that way. New places, new people, new cultures. It taught me how to adapt, be resourceful and find the positive in most challenges. It made me seek out connection and authenticity, which is probably why I’m so drawn to candid photography and environments where people are not afraid to be their true selves.

One big struggle was having the courage to go out on my own creatively. There’s this real fear that comes with putting your work out there, will people appreciate it? Will they see the story I’m trying to portray? Or the emotion I’m trying to provoke? Especially when you’re doing something you love, it feels personal. It took me a while to trust that my perspective was valid and that the right people would resonate and align with it.

There were a lot of ‘no’s! Whether it was in football (soccer) or photography. Rejection is a part of life, yes it can be brutal but I learned to see it as redirection. Each ‘no’ taught me something, refined my approach, or simply made room for the right ‘yes’ down the line. That lesson alone has helped me stay resilient more times than I can count.

Another thing I’ve had to learn and honestly still learning, is how to balance the work within my life. It’s easy to get caught up pouring everything into work that you love and letting it dictate your schedule. But I intentionally try to flip that, I want my work to fit into the life I want to live. For me, that means carving out time for the people I love, for my health, and creativity so I can actually show up better for my clients, my players, and myself.

So no, it hasn’t been smooth but it certainly has been worth it. The challenges shaped my perspective, made me more empathetic, and gave me the drive to keep going until the right opportunities aligned. I’m pleased to say, life and work have been quite aligned lately.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work as a photographer lives under the name HARTISTRAW.
At HARTISTRAW, we capture more than just moments, we capture the essence of what makes them unforgettable. My work is all about creating visuals that are raw, real, and full of character through authentic storytelling.

What I do best is tell stories through candid and honest imagery. I specialize in photography that provokes emotion. Whether it’s the grit of a street scene, the elegance of a tailored portrait, or the electric energy of a live event. Every shot is more than a picture, it’s a piece of art and a story waiting to be told.

What I’m most proud of is the trust people place in me to tell their stories as they really are: raw, authentic, and undeniably them. One thing people often tell me is that through looking at my work they feel as if they are there. Not just an image but a real moment frozen in time and that’s the biggest compliment because that’s exactly what I aim for. In every shoot, who they truly are needs to shine through. Whether it’s a small business needing authentic branding or a family wanting memories they can still feel years from now. I want people to feel something when they see my work.

What sets HARTISTRAW apart is Integrity and Community. Transparent communication, fair pricing, and delivering on what we promise. Including our community along the journey, we believe in giving back and using art to uplift others. Offering time, talent, and tools to support stories that matter.

HARTISTRAW isn’t just about taking photos, it’s about celebrating people exactly as they are, in the moments that matter most, and giving them a piece of art that keeps that story alive forever.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice? Start now with what you have, where you are, and just create. Your growth will start from there, don’t wait for perfect.

One thing I wish I knew sooner is your work is not for everyone and that’s okay. Yes it might not be for everyone, but it will be for someone! The right people will find you if you keep showing up authentically. Keep going through the ‘no’s’ until you get to the right ‘yes’.

Learn to balance your work around your life, not the other way around. Burnout is real, especially when you’re passionate. And lastly, trust your eye, your gut, and your unique way of seeing the world. That’s your superpower! Don’t waste it or water it down trying to be like everyone else.

Be real, be raw and undeniably you.
