Conversations with Maya Elizabeth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Elizabeth.

Hi Maya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Hi! Thank YOU all! My name is Maya Elizabeth and I’m a worship leader, singer-songwriter, and recording artist. I believe we were made to live full, not empty. So, I write thought-provoking, inspirational-soul music for the listener who needs a little healing, truth, and love.

I was born in Santa Monica, CA then raised mostly in Baltimore, MD. I first started writing when I was 6 and grew up serving on the worship team in the church from around 12 years old. In 2016, I earned my BBA in marketing and was the valedictorian of Howard University’s School of Business. Thereafter, I launched Maya Elizabeth Music LLC and pursued my music full-time.

With the help of my favorite producer, Rob Levine III, I released my debut album, ‘Soulhouette: This is M.E.’ that same year. Promoting that project led me on a mini-tour around Southern California, and I ended up moving there for a unique job opportunity. From 2017-2020, I led as a worship staff member at Hillside Community Church in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. Now, you’ll see and hear me in worship gatherings and other events of various cultures, sizes, locations, and experiences. Along with my passions for worship leading and making music, I love helping other creatives strategize, tell their stories, and get their websites up.

Most recently, I released my multi-part project. “Space To Fill,” The EP is available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc.)! It’s also accompanied by a 10-day guided journal, the Space to Fill candle, and a music commentary podcast—all of which will amplify the listening experience and is available at As always, my hope for anyone who listens, is that their soul smiles and that they’re refreshed!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Certainly not! I’ve found one of my biggest challenges has been remaining confident in my art and dedicating energy, focus, and time to building my vision, rather than someone else’s. Life gets real, and when I don’t feel like my entrepreneurial and creative efforts are being fruitful, it can get discouraging. But it’s totally worth it!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m primarily a singer-songwriter and recording artist. I play acoustic guitar, as well.

Embracing my own sound has been a unique part of my journey. In terms of genre, I don’t quite fit in the Gospel box, nor do I fit in the Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) box. However, I’ve been able to blend into various spaces and flow in what I describe as my “inspiration-soul” vibe.

When it comes to my original music, I’m known for singing with a unique cadence and writing poetic, introspective lyrics with soothing, soulful melodies.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Sure! Growing up, I was always very imaginative and creative. In fact, I had imaginary friends and had created an entire world for them in my head. Ask anyone who babysat my siblings and me back then, they could tell you exactly who I’m talking about!

I’m highly introverted—which surprises a lot of people, somehow—but I’m also super friendly when I’ve warmed up a bit.

In school, I was always super anxious about earning good grades. My competitiveness would come out in my academic pursuits. For extracurriculars, I participated mostly in the arts and avoided sports because I tended to focus on what I knew I could win at. I’ve always been calculated, meticulous, maybe a little OCD, and rather risk-avoidant.

But focusing so much on achievement and performance, and equating accolades with the measure of my worth as a person-shaped a lot of my struggles with people-pleasing and perfectionism. Thankfully, I’m learning to grow through these proclivities so I can enjoy life a little more fully! (Big shoutout to therapy… 100% recommend!)
