Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Ponomaryova
Hi Maria, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I had a passion for drawing and art. In 2010, I started my social media accounts on Tumblr. Oh my, does anyone remember it? Later, I started running my Instagram in 2015 I launched my YouTube channel, sharing drawing tutorials, DIY projects, and unboxing videos. I started this journey back when nobody believed in social media—when the idea of making money from it sounded like a fantasy. No one had a clue that platforms like Instagram and YouTube could become full-time careers. But that’s exactly when I jumped in. Over time, my channel gained popularity, attracting a dedicated audience. My growing audience fueled my next big adventure: travel.
As my passion for travel grew, I began documenting my journeys on Instagram, sharing photos and stories from various destinations. Gaining all these followers wasn’t easy—it took a lot of hard work. I’ve created over 400 videos on my YouTube channel and posted nearly 5,000 times on Instagram. I literally worked day and night—editing videos myself, acting as my own manager and producer, and handling all my campaigns solo. Even now, I personally edit my content and write every caption myself.
With over 1.1 million followers on Instagram, I’ve turned my passion into a career—partnering with some of the world’s most luxurious hotels and resorts. You may have seen my work with Four Seasons, Aman Resorts, The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, Belmond, Six Senses, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, The Luxury Collection by Marriott, Mandarin Oriental, and One&Only Resorts—where I don’t just check in; I create experiences that transport my audience to these dream destinations.
Beyond just pretty pictures, I focus on storytelling and immersive experiences. I want people to feel the morning breeze from a cliffside villa in Santorini, taste the handcrafted cocktails at a sunset beach bar in Bali, and experience the slow luxury of an Aman spa retreat.
To date, I have visited 85 countries and 49 U.S. states, always aiming to inspire others to explore and embrace new cultures. Through my content, I strive to create genuine connections with my audience, encouraging them to broaden their horizons and believe in themselves.
I have extensive experience working with leading fashion and lifestyle brands such as Dior, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, Samsung, Philips, Nokia, Costco, Whole Foods Market, BMW, Visa, Mastercard, Sony, Kellogg’s.
From working with Visit the USA, Visit Charleston, and Visit Memphis to collaborating with top-tier hospitality brands, I’ve built a career that blends adventure with high-end travel marketing. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
The best part? This journey is just getting started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A smooth road? Oh, I wish! If anything, my journey has been more like an off-road adventure.
Back when I started, nobody took social media seriously. People thought I was just wasting time online, not realizing I was building a brand before that was even a thing. There were no influencers to look up to, no playbook to follow—I had to figure everything out myself.
The biggest struggle? Doing everything solo. I was my own videographer, editor, manager, producer, and social media strategist, all while trying to convince brands that influencer marketing was the future. Oh, and let’s not forget the sleepless nights, the algorithm changes, and the moments when I had to fight for fair pay because people assumed “posting pictures” wasn’t real work. Even my ex-boyfriend didn’t believe that it was a real job and constantly laughed at me. Well. Now he’s an influencer too 🙂
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For three years straight, I traveled 365 days a year, working non-stop with over 500 hotels across the globe. No other influencer in the U.S. has ever done that.
I specialize in travel storytelling, partnering with top-tier hotels like Four Seasons, Aman Resorts, The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, Belmond, One&Only, and Rosewood Hotels & Resorts to craft immersive experiences that transport my audience to dream destinations. But my work goes beyond just stunning resorts—I also focus on cultural heritage and history, collaborating with some of the most prestigious museums and landmarks in the U.S.
I’ve worked with NASA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Filoli Historic House & Garden, Honolulu Museum of Art, Alcatraz Island, Rodin Museum, MoMA San Francisco, Boston Museum of Science, Iolani Palace, National WWII Museum in New Orleans, Whitney Museum of American Art, 9/11 Tribute Museum, Boston Art Museum, Empire State Building, and many others.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Success in this industry isn’t just about talent or luck—it’s about consistency, adaptability, and the willingness to outwork everyone else.
At the end of the day, the difference between those who dream and those who make it happen is simple: who’s willing to put in the work, every single day, without excuses? I am. And that’s why I’m here.
