Conversations with Kara Knox

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Knox.

Hi Kara, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It all started with my love of flavor and food. I’m not one for unseasoned or under-seasoned food, so I began to play around with different spices blends combinations. A few years later, and a lot of research, Kara Felicia Co was born. Over the years I’ve done a lot of research in sourcing all the ingredients that I use to develop our spice blends as well as creating flavor palates that you won’t find everywhere else. I love creating unique combinations and I believe that is one of the reasons why we’ve been able to get to where we are today.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh my gosh, no. It has not been a smooth road. In the beginning, it was just trying to work within our budget while still being able to work on orders and making sure that we had the supplies to fulfill those orders. The biggest challenge that we faced, within the last year, was due to the pandemic. There were so many things that we experienced when the world shut down.

There were a lot of severe shortages, especially in the plastics industry. We had always been able to easily source our packaging from US vendors, we had to go outside of the US because everything had been diverted to PPE protection for healthcare workers. It took us a little over a month to get our bottles.

With spice vendors, there were shortages of ingredients that we use regularly. Orders that normally took a week to receive could took up to 3 – 4 weeks.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I pretty much do everything. I’m known in my circle as the resident foodie so I’m always getting questions about cooking or getting food pics from friends and family. I specialize in creating different flavors and developing recipes. What I’m most proud is the company that I have created with my own two hands.

What sets me apart from others is that I love to have fun in my brand. I’m not afraid to try something new.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
The biggest risk that we’ve taken this far is when we had to take a risk and place a vendor order that was not within the US. It’s like sight unseen and with a company that we had never dealt with before. I’ve become more of a risk taker as I get further along into my business but in turn, I look to make sure that I am making sound business decisions that will benefit Kara Felicia Co.

I think that taking risks can be a really great thing, especially in a business. My perspective is that you need to take risks at some point, to help your brand to grow. Not doing so leaves you in the same place that you were a few years ago and I don’t know any business owner that doesn’t want to experience growth. Without taking a risk, you just don’t know how far your business can go.
