Conversations with Jessica Robey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Robey.

Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
For a little while, I talked with close friends about wanting to start a candle business. Why candles? one of them asked. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved them. The scents they can bring, the feelings you get when lighting them, the warmth they give you. When writing down my ideas, I wanted to make candles with affirmations, meaning and bring light to others.

I have always been surrounded by strong women who I think of when making these. My mother who always told me to speak into existence what I want/need. She is a medium/Reiki master, so she taught me about chakras, crystals, and herbs throughout my life. My Granny was who introduced me to candles. We would burn them mixing waxes to create our own. From that birthed what I like to call Emiline’s Divine Candles. Emiline was my Granny’s middle name and Divine from your divine destiny and what you can make it. Since launching my Etsy store on Halloween 2020, I have sold over 300 candles and recently started selling at local pop-ups and farmers” markets. I am very grateful I get to share my love of candles with others.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I will say that it always hasn’t been a smooth road. When starting off, I failed a lot! I had a lot of ideas I thought would turn out great or played around until getting the perfect mixture of wax to the scent, but in those failures, I learned a lot. I am still having challenges even after starting my store eight months ago, but I know that with them will come growth!

I always tell people if you have an idea DO IT! There is nothing stopping you and taking the risk is better than nothing at all and wondering the what-ifs!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Professionally I work for a nonprofit workforce development program for women in Baltimore City. I love working where I do and interacting with so many different women and learning from them. Before working there, I served in both AmeriCorps in Baltimore for two years and Peace Corps in Jamaica for three years.

Besides making candles, I do improv comedy with a theater here in Baltimore called Highwire Improv. I have also performed with other theaters in various states. I’m working on my stand-up comedy routine… stay tuned! But I love and enjoy meeting people and laughing with them!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising is, I make all my candles in a studio apartment. All my candles are made in my small apartment I share with my cat Apollo Prince. To some, this is surprising given how many I restock with at a time but to me, if I am doing something I love, space can be very minimal! I will say sometimes Apollo tries to join in on the fun, which can be a bit much but then knows when to give space.
