Conversations with Jennifer Blackburn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Blackburn.

Hi Jennifer , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my journey in the fitness industry as a way to support myself through school, but quickly discovered a deep passion for movement, community, and wellness. I got my start at the YMCA, eventually launching my own training business. Over time, I advanced to a regional director role, overseeing multiple fitness facilities across various regions.

When the pandemic hit, I pivoted quickly—building a strong online presence and serving over 600 clients virtually. That experience inspired me to merge digital and in-person experiences, leading to the creation of a hybrid training model that combines the best of both worlds.

I currently serve as the Regional Director for RTR Pilates. We operate eight Pilates Reformer studios and are continuing to expand across the U.S. With a strong presence in the DMV area, we’re excited about the opportunity to launch a new region—potentially in Baltimore.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Navigating the fitness landscape can be challenging, as we saw during the COVID-19 pandemic. Flexibility is key—both in adapting to current trends and discerning between lasting movements and short-lived fads. Finding and retaining talent in the fitness industry remains a major hurdle, especially as professionals and clients alike are bombarded with conflicting messages on social media.

Pilates Reformer, in particular, is emerging as a powerful and growing facet of the fitness world. As we age, the importance of low-impact, regenerative movement becomes increasingly clear. The combination of scientific support and a rising social media presence has helped bring modalities like Pilates to the forefront—highlighting its role in longevity, injury prevention, and overall wellness.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve spent over 25 years in the fitness industry, starting on the front lines as a group fitness instructor, cycling coach, and personal trainer. My passion for movement and community has led me to work with some of the top fitness brands in the country—including Equinox, Life Time Fitness, and The St. James—where I’ve helped build programs, lead teams, and energize spaces with purpose and impact.

Today, I serve as the Regional Director for RTR Pilates, overseeing eight reformer studios and helping scale our brand nationally. I specialize in instructor development, hybrid fitness models, and creating spaces where people feel strong, seen, and supported—whether they’re brand new or seasoned athletes.

What I’m most proud of is the balance I’ve built: between science and heart, performance and purpose, career and family. I’ve raised five kids, just became a grandmother (again!), and continue to mentor the next generation of fitness professionals while staying grounded in why I started—because I love movement, people, and possibility.

What sets me apart is my ability to lead with both strategy and soul. Whether I’m coaching a class, growing a team, or speaking on national media, my goal is always the same: help people move better, feel better, and live fully.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success isn’t just about titles, metrics, or milestones—it’s about impact. It’s seeing someone walk into a studio unsure of themselves and leave feeling strong, empowered, and seen. It’s watching instructors I’ve mentored rise into leaders. It’s building a business that not only grows but stays rooted in purpose and community.

Success is also deeply personal. As a mom of five and now a grandmother, success means being fully present for my family while continuing to lead in an industry I love. It’s being able to evolve—through trends, challenges, and even pandemics—while staying true to my values.

Ultimately, success is when the work I do aligns with who I am—and when the people around me are better because of it.
