Conversations with Eric & Tina Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric & Tina Miller.

Hi Eric & Tina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The Infinite Love Project started in 2018 as a small, genuine offering of kindness from Eric & Tina Miller. They were giving out stickers and unique wooden Infinite Love Hearts to people they encountered. A few years before Eric had begun creating custom signs with positive messages on commission and to give as gifts which included variations of the Be Kind message.

Then in January, 2020 Eric was overloaded by the growing divisiveness and negativity and needed to counter that, reminding himself as well that everything is better when you are around kind and empathetic people. That is when, on a porch in Westminster, MD, the stencil art BE KIND sign boards and crayons were created. Eric started hanging the signs in public spaces throughout Central Maryland.

Friends and others began buying Infinite Love Hearts to pass out themselves and BE KIND signs to display on porches and fences, and in businesses and classrooms, as a reminder to be kind to yourself and others. The Millers sold them at markets and festivals for over three years. Now the hearts and signs are available online and have been shipped to 42 states and taken to nine countries.

The feedback from people is that the signs give them hope and remind them to pause and that we have commonality and we need to connect and communicate on that positive basis. Understanding this, The Millers, who are also certified yoga instructors, created and now conduct team building Kindness Workshops which includes an intro to energy and mindfulness, teaches tools for resilience like breath-work, and uses music and art to help participants create a tactile reminder, they get to paint their own BE KIND signs.

The hearts and signs started a movement that people began donating to, so The Millers also started a nonprofit to channel those funds to support the community by teaching about kindness and giving people the opportunity to paint their own BE KIND signs as a reminder. The nonprofit Action For Kindness now runs the Community of Kindness Workshop Program to take the kindness workshop to other nonprofit organizations and schools to create impact with middle school kids throughout Central Maryland.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been challenges that come with starting a small business and a nonprofit and the growth spurts that come with those all along the way.

An initial challenge was the timing of it all. Our “business of kindness” became an official entity in February of 2020. As we geared up to see if Eric’s woodworking hobby could pay for itself and follow our passion to connect with people and inspire kindness, the marketing plan took a huge turn when the shut down occurred 30 days in. It was helpful that Tina, who has a background in web design and internet marketing, had already built an ecommerce website, but that did not help with in-person outreach. However, within another 30 days an invitation came to vend at a local farmers market which was deemed essential and the in-person plan was back in gear.

Another challenge has been balancing revenue through a market focus re-gear. Even with part-time support, Eric and Tina could not maintain both a full vending schedule, a workshop schedule, and build a nonprofit so a new plan cut vending from approximately 60 events a year to just 5. The focus then became to ramp up scheduling workshops for both organizations. The change has been a win-win when it comes to staying true to the mission of inspiring kindness and supporting our communities and revenue is catching up.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are known as the BE KIND Sign people. We are also known for the Infinite Love Hearts we hand out. Underlying it all, we are know for inspiring kindness and collaboration.

One of our tag lines, Kindness Leads to Collaboration, is descriptive of how we work and have build this movement through collaborations. The most popular BE KIND signs are Eric’s artistic interpretation of collaborations when people ask, “Can you…?” and then we brainstorm and do. The Rainbow, Pan African, Peacock, and Maryland Flag BE KIND signs are all art based on collaboration as are other custom design requests. And, development of our workshops comes from collaborations with people and organizations to help meet needs using the signs and our knowledge of yoga as inspiration.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
