Today we’d like to introduce you to DEETRANADA.
Hi DEETRANADA, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I figured I wanted to be a rapper as young as 11. I sat on the bedroom floor recording myself off of my phone, and didn’t drop my first song until 13/14. If only I knew i’d come this far. Being on TV has been a blur, and the tours and concerts that followed after. Reaching adulthood, I took a leap and rebranded. I wanted to show growth. NADA WORLD is what changed my life. I took a chance and dared to be different. That boldness landed me opportunities such as Yo! MTV Raps, BET Hip Hop Awards, Fortnite, HBO MAX, Netflix, Nike, and more.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. On the outside looking in, someone would assume so. I’ve been told no more times than I can remember. Coming hopeful and wide eyed to labels just to turn around with my head down because the numbers were so low. Being young putting my trust in certain people that didn’t have my best interest. Being offered a once in a life time opportunity and I turned THAT down because of the sick things I was asked to do for it. I don’t like touching on the fact that- with no surprise- a young black woman is faced with adversity in a male dominated industry. Though, in the past couple of years it has been a surge in popularity for female rappers, and I love to see it. It’s so much more to the ride than the potholes in it. It’s the drive and the route.
A lot of personal things in my life has happened in between time that’s extremely detrimental to how I make music and navigate through these spaces, but I believe all the things that lead you to where you are now was meant.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My name is DEETRANADA, and i’m a rapper. I specialize in talking my shit. I would say some know me from ‘The Rap Game’ but a lot of people know me from my later work from ‘NADA WORLD’ forward. I’m also known for a bunch of viral freestyles I had when I was younger. I feel i’m most proud of the fact i’m still going. It’s so many achievements I can’t even name that i’m proud of. I feel what sets me apart from others is that besides demographic and numbers, I’m never satisfied. Like a ball python, I have to keep growing and shedding off past things that don’t benefit my growth. I never cared to ‘fit in’, and I give myself space to LIVE. I have a relationship with fans where most of us in a way- grew up together, so I make sure every now and then I respond and really talk to people. I feel like that’s important in the longevity of your support system.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Keep writing! Write that idea down before you forget it forever! Put that song out NOW what are you holding on to it for? Give yourself grace, it doesn’t happen overnight. Keep the people that start with you CLOSE even though not EVERYONE has good intentions. When in writers block, watch your favorite cartoon/movie. The worst thing that can happen with your music is YOU stopping! I wish I knew all of these things when I started. Though i’ve had a fruitful start it’s a lot of things I missed out on because of pride. Don’t be like me, have some humility.
