Conversations with Chiquita Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chiquita Johnson.

Hi Chiquita, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Yes sure. My name is Chiquita Johnson and I am the host and founder of Chronicles of a Virgo podcast and blog. I launched my blog back in 2019 after my last suicidal attempt. I was having a really hard time in life and dealing with a lot of depression and anxiety. Being that I had been working in the mental health field for almost 10 years, I for sure thought my life hit rock bottom. At the time, I was in therapy and just trying to find other ways to navigate through my healing and I loved to write. I started my blog at the time on WordPress as a way to just positively release the thoughts that I was having and to maybe inspire others with my story. Throughout that time, I considered starting a podcast as well however I wasn’t confident enough to begin. I continued to blog and networked with other bloggers and thought for sure that I had found my true purpose. All of that came crashing down in April of 2020 when I lost my grandmother. One of my biggest supporters and one of the main people in my life that loved and supported me unconditionally was no longer here and I began feeling that all hope at that point was lost for me.

From that point, I would write from time to time, but it didn’t feel like I had that fire in me anymore. See, you have to understand, at this time most of the wisdom and motivation that I possessed came from my grandmother and without her I really felt like nothing. I knew that I couldn’t just give up on myself no matter how hard it got, I had to continue trying to find my purpose in life. After enduring some minor health issues throughout 2020 and 2021, I knew that God truly had bigger plans for me, and I needed to take full charge of my life again.

In January of 2022, I launched my official podcast “Chronicles of a Virgo.” I had finally gained the momentum and confidence that I needed to put myself out there more and truly be a living testament to help others in the world. The purpose of my podcast is to help and motivate others to heal into better versions of themselves and to know that they are not alone in their healing journeys.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I learned at a young age that while navigating life, I would experience some unexpected trials and tribulations. Unfortunately, I have experienced more of those moments then I would have liked however those moments have made me a stronger and wiser person. From being sexually and physically abused to numerous health scares and close family loses, my journey has always been bumpy, however I always managed to get back up and fight the good fight! I am thankful to have a supportive friend circle, therapist and family members that have poured into me during those moments and never allowed me to give up fully on myself.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently for my fulltime position, I work in case and medical management serving one of the most challenging populations in Baltimore and throughout the state of Maryland. I work daily to ensure that my members have the adequate and necessary resources for their everyday living, mental health resources and are receiving sustainable healthcare. Aside from my fulltime work, I am a podcast host and blogger in which I use my platform to help others through their healing journeys as well as speaking on personal experiences of my own that I have overcame.

In my school years, I was always known for sports as I played basketball from grade school to college where my career unfortunately ended while attending the College of Notre Dame of MD to a knee injury. Besides sports, I have been known for the type of positions I have held within certain companies throughout MD and for my advocacy work for women and children of sexual abuse and domestic violence.

Something that I would say that I am most proud of is finally finding my own voice without validation from others. For so long, I have lived in the shadows of others, tried to fit into circles I didn’t belong and just didn’t know which direction to go in life. Starting my own podcast and blog has allowed me to take back my power from everyone that has ever silenced me or even projected pain and trauma into my life. I am now standing in my own purpose and using my voice to help others while also continuing to help myself heal.

I always knew I was different from others around me and didn’t fit in. I’ve come to realize that each person is unique in their own way and many of us are molded by our environments and life experiences. I chose to not allow my circumstances and my past to dictate my future.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Sure, I am always open and willing to work and speak with others or even on other platforms. If you are someone that has a story and turned your pain into your purpose or just a professional giving back and healing others, I am always open to collab.
