Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Hyland.
Hi Brad, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
For the last six years I’ve been a full-time voice actor. Before this, I spent 30+ years in the professional commercial landscaping business. During those years I did some voiceover training, dabbled in standup comedy and for eight years was the front man singing for a roots rock ‘n’ roll/blues band. But being a voice actor was all I ever really wanted to do and in 2015 my wife convinced me to go for my dream. Thanks to her, I have customers all around the globe and I’m able to follow my passion every day. I used to hear people say, “If you love what you, do you’ll never work a day in your life.” But I never believed it until now.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Becoming a voice actor is a tough thing to do. It takes several years to learn this business and no matter how successful you are, you still need to invest in new learning and training. Many people who attempt voice acting find it difficult to sustain it as a viable career. Voice actors face rejection all day long, every day of the year. Also, you must be a true entrepreneur to be successful. Having a good voice is about 10% of what’s needed. The rest is all about running your business and working very, very hard.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My social media tag is: “The most versatile voice from coast to coast” and I live that every day. It’s amazing to have opportunities to be the voice of a dog in a pet food commercial in the morning, and then the voice of a cozy grandpa for a children’s video in the afternoon. I voice such a great variety of work from video games, corporate explainers, and trailers to political and YouTube ads. But one of my favorite jobs is being the voice of Santa in the Elf on the Shelf movies. I love connecting with all my customers and giving them the voice they want for their project.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I know this awful pandemic has affected so many people. Fortunately, my life in a quiet, secluded, padded room did not change much.
