Conversations with Ameera Hassan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ameera Hassan.

Ameera Hassan

Hi Ameera, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a Palestinian self-taught baker who was born and raised in Birmingham, AL. I’ve always had a passion for baking ever since I can remember. Back in 2019, I earned some experience baking at one of our French local bakeries. From there, I got inspired to finally start something of my own.

We didn’t have any Middle Eastern options in Birmingham besides my brand, so I think that’s what set me apart from everyone else. Just months after marketing on social media, the support was consistent. Having family out in the DMV has brought me to start doing orders in the area.

One of our proudest moments yet, was our appearance at Halal Food Fest DMV, back in August! We are currently taking custom and catering orders in Baltimore and surrounding areas.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t a smooth road to get to this point. I think it’s important for those bumps along the way, it teaches you new lessons and techniques to better improve the business.

The biggest struggle was deciding where to start and how to get the vision going. But once I put one foot after the other, everything came together, including the support.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a self-taught baker who specializes in Middle Eastern desserts. Some of my most popular desserts are Baklava and Knafeh. Our traditional Baklava consists of layers of crunchy phyllo dough and a walnut mixture.

Knafeh is a very popular traditional Palestinian dessert that consists of a crunchy layer of phyllo dough and a cheesy center drenched in simple syrup.

I’m most proud of the authenticity and quality of the desserts, we try our best to bring the authentic taste to the customers to make them feel like they are right back home. I think that’s what sets us apart the most from others.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
I think it’s important to look at the ones who do it best and learn from them. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn from others.

But most importantly, don’t put off what you want to do because you don’t feel ready. You have to take that first jump and it’ll all fall in line as long as you see the vision.
