Community Highlights: Meet Whitney West of The Fearless Woman Collective, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney West

Hi Whitney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Baltimore, MD, in a loving, supportive, and faith-filled family. From a young age, I dreamed of being three things: a writer, a wife, and a mother. While life hasn’t always unfolded as planned, I am grateful to embrace all three roles today. Although I experienced a stillbirth in 2019 with my precious angel son, Baby Boy, I hold onto the strength of that journey and recognize that I am still a mother. This experience has shaped my purpose: to encourage others, especially women, through the Word of God through various forms of media.

I attended Baltimore City College High School, where I played goalie on the soccer team and served as editor-in-chief of the school paper. After high school, I received a soccer scholarship from Delaware State University, where I majored in print journalism and political science while also being the news editor for the student paper. My college journey wasn’t linear—nothing in my life has been—but it always worked out as it should. I later transferred to Morgan State University to study Public Relations.

After some time at Morgan, I took a break from college to pursue my entrepreneurial passions fully. I started a blog, Whitney ‘Nic’ James (whitneynicjames.com), that blended faith, lifestyle, and secondhand adventures, and then launched Nic’s Picks, an online vintage resale business. Blogging became a creative outlet and a way to connect with others while sharing my interests. Entrepreneurship runs in my blood; my grandfather, mother, and now younger sister are all entrepreneurs, which inspired me to create my own business.

I eventually earned my BA in Communication Studies from the University of Maryland Global Campus, graduating during the pandemic. Afterward, I secured my first higher-education role as a writer and editor at Johns Hopkins University. I grew professionally and discovered my passion for writing and storytelling in academia.

Writing has always been a part of me. I’ve loved storytelling since elementary school, even publishing my first short story in fourth grade. Over the years, my passion led me to earn a summer scholarship for a program at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill School of Journalism in 11th grade. I later interned at The Afro newspaper and the smooth jazz radio station WSMJ 104.3 during college. Through these experiences, I continued developing my voice and connecting with others through blogging.

I’m excited to return to entrepreneurship, focusing on my women’s ministry and communications work through my business, The Fearless Woman Collective. I’m completing my Master’s in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Communications and Pastoral Counseling, and I am set to graduate in Spring 2025. My first book will also be released in Spring 2025. My faith has been my foundation throughout this journey, providing me with the strength and purpose that shape my life and work.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve faced some incredibly challenging times, starting with the loss of my grandfather, who was one of the most important and influential figures in my life, just as I was entering adulthood. There was also the profound heartache of losing my Baby Boy to stillbirth at the end of 2019, a loss that deeply affected both my husband and me. The pandemic and multiple job layoffs only added to our struggles. Yet, through it all, my husband and I persevered by God’s grace.

More recently, in the past year and a half, I’ve also encountered numerous job rejections despite knowing I was qualified and believing these opportunities were meant for me. Yet, in hindsight, I see that my path has unfolded differently than I once imagined. These experiences have reinforced my commitment to uplifting others as they navigate life’s challenges.

My father has always encouraged me to dare to be different, and I have embraced that challenge, even when it has felt uncomfortable. My mother often tells me that I am battle-tested, and rather than wearing it as a badge of honor like I once did, I now see it as a badge of empathy. Each hardship and struggle has shaped me into the woman I am today, empowering me to encourage, inspire, and teach others—especially women—how to navigate life with incredible faith and grace.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Fearless Woman Collective, LLC?
I am the founder and executive director of The Fearless Woman Collective, LLC (TFWC), an organization dedicated to empowering women to embrace their faith in God and navigate life’s challenges with courage and grace. Our mission is to uplift women through transformative messages and community support, providing a platform where they can connect, grow, and share their stories.

We specialize in various offerings, virtual gatherings, vision board workshops, biblical teaching and studies, and pastoral counseling services. Our pastoral counseling services provide spiritual guidance and support as women navigate personal challenges, fostering healing and growth through faith-based practices rooted in God’s Word. What sets us apart is our authentic, faith-driven approach. We create a safe and nurturing environment where women can come together, share their experiences, and inspire one another, emphasizing the importance of genuine connection and spiritual growth in all that we do.

I’m incredibly proud of how we support women through life’s waiting seasons. Our vision board workshops inspire them to dream with audacious faith, believing in what’s possible through God. Our biblical teachings deepen their understanding of His faithfulness, providing strength and clarity for life’s challenges. Through our outreach programs, women are empowered to find their voices, share their stories, and see their lives as testimonies. It’s humbling to witness our impact, helping women recognize and activate their God-given potential.

Additionally, I am excited about my upcoming book, How You Wait Matters, which will be released in Spring 2025. This project encapsulates my journey and the core values of The Fearless Woman Collective, focusing on the importance of patience, faith in God, and purpose in our waiting seasons.

Ultimately, I want your readers to know that TFWC is more than just an organization; it’s a movement dedicated to inspiring women to live boldly and purposefully, grounded in their faith in God. We are here to provide resources, encouragement, and a community that fosters growth, healing, and empowerment.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I’ve learned countless invaluable lessons along the way, but three stand out the most:

First, I’ve come to understand that God’s redirection is often His protection. What may feel like a setback or detour is really His way of guiding me toward something better, even if I can’t see it in the moment. This has taught me to trust in His vision over my own and to be mindful of how He moves in my life, knowing He sees the bigger picture.

Second, I’ve learned to embrace discomfort. Life has placed me in many uncomfortable situations, especially in recent years, and I’ve realized that discomfort doesn’t mean I’m on the wrong path. Instead, it often signals growth and transformation. Being uncomfortable is an invitation to stretch, learn, and grow into the person I’m meant to be. I’m grateful for these moments because they’ve shown me I can survive and thrive through change.

Lastly, empathy is more important now than ever. We’re all facing battles, often ones that others can’t see. A small act—a kind word, a quick check-in, or just being present—can comfort and encourage someone who truly needs it. Each of us, no matter our age, race, or background, is navigating something challenging or waiting for something hopeful. Understanding this helps us meet each other with compassion and grace, knowing that even simple gestures can make a profound impact.
