Today we’d like to introduce you to Ursula Sabia Sukinik.
Ursula helped more than 3,000 women navigate their pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum experience as a childbirth educator. One day, a friend asked her to attend the birth of her baby for extra support. At the birth, Ursula “caught the baby” and caught a passion for helping serve families during a pivotal moment in their lives.
Suddenly, she understood how one moment could change a whole family’s trajectory. She understood that she could change the world—for the better—one birth at a time, and she studied to become a doula. She founded Birth You Desire® in 1999, and 21 years later, Ursula and her team have helped more than 4,500 families have the births they desired. The Birth You Desire® team of 10 doulas—with more than 80 years of collective expertise in all types of birth (low risk to high risk, hospital, birth centers, and home)—supports clients from conception through recovery.
In this genuinely collaborative practice, the client chooses a concierge team and services. Ursula, the CEO, operates the practice and works as a full-time doula, personally attending over 1,400 births. The Birth You Desire® team is one of the most experienced in the U.S. with Ursula or any of the Birth You Desire® team members at your side listening to and understanding your needs. I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Birth You Desire® got its start in New Jersey and relocated when Ursula and her family moved to the DMV to support her husband’s career. Relocating a business and developing new relationships with providers was challenging. Ursula was determined and patient. It was a long four years, but the practice grew organically as the team’s reputation grew.
As Birth You Desire®’s client base expanded, so did the services the team provides. Some clients moved out of state and could not find a comparable doula near them, so the Birth You Desire® team began offering long-distance web-based classes and virtual doula support. An entire decade before the coronavirus pandemic, Birth You Desire® was supporting clients with virtual doula services and support—something that helped them pivot over the past 15 months.
Like most businesses, Birth You Desire® was affected by the pandemic. Hospitals reduced visitors and support services to minimize infection risks. Fertility centers closed their doors temporarily, and pregnancies dropped as everyone pondered how to navigate the worldwide pandemic.
Given its prior experience, Birth You Desire® was uniquely positioned to provide virtual support to birthing parents. And, the Birth You Desire® team offered workshops to other doulas on how to deliver services and help families virtually. Despite a reduced number of clients, Birth You Desire® attended over 150 births using video conferencing across the U.S. and internationally with clients in Bahrain and Honduras.
