Today we’d like to introduce you to Tymia Yvette.
Hi Tymia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always known I was meant to create. My mom used to say, since I was a child, that I would be creative—and she wasn’t kidding. I was just three when my parents discovered me in the bathroom, my face completely smeared with her makeup. Even then, I was entirely in my element.
Growing up, style was a full-on family affair. My dad’s custom suits were all about the hidden details—from his initials stitched inside the jacket to his perfectly paired pocket square. He’d call my sisters and me downstairs to showcase every element of his outfit, from a bespoke wool fedora to personalized cufflinks—a true lesson in individuality and confidence.
On my paternal side, my grandmother was a timeless icon. Even at 90, she maintained a signature look with meticulously polished nails, always wearing her signature lipstick—which also doubled as her rouge—and filled-in eyebrows (to ensure no gray hairs would show), plus a wardrobe of wigs that took her all day to choose, ensuring her outfit was styled just right. In contrast, my maternal grandmother was all about textiles: she played with unexpected textures, bright colors, and bold patterns, always finishing her look with chunky bracelets, rings on every finger, oversized sunglasses, and a radiant, ear-to-ear smile that completed her look. And then there’s my mom, the epitome of modern glamour. She was stylish and trendy in every aspect of her life. She transformed our family home into a masterpiece of modern, moody vibes—with faux fur-covered coffee tables, mirrored accents, and dramatic lighting—and her personal style was bold and ever-evolving. One day her hair was bright red, the next day it was blonde—period. But one thing she never left home without was makeup. My mom always said that a look is never complete without your accessories, and makeup is the ultimate way to accessorize and express yourself. My childhood home was always vibrant, loud, and filled with excitement—my parents’ friends would often come over, and the energy pulsed through the house with soul, funk, and jazz music, turning every moment into a celebration of art and style. That vibrant environment made me the creative artist I am today.
All these influences ignited my passion for self-expression. I pursued Fine Art through high school and Morgan State University, discovering that creativity extends far beyond a paintbrush. A part-time job at M.A.C. Cosmetics quickly became my calling, and I advanced to Trainer of Artistry & Development for 16 years—working behind the scenes at award shows, New York Fashion Weeks, and countless photo shoots.
Yet the most transformative moments were deeply personal: helping my mom feel beautiful after losing her hair to ovarian cancer and reminding a young girl in my studio that she didn’t need a full face of makeup to shine because her beauty was already inherent. These experiences instilled in me core values of empathy, resilience, and the importance of genuine, one-on-one connections. I believe that building meaningful relationships not only creates lasting memories but also enriches our lives in profound ways. Everyone deserves to feel seen, loved, and confident—and for me, that starts with creating a space where beauty is not just about makeup but about celebrating individuality and self-expression.
At Tymia Yvette Beauty, I believe in celebrating the beauty in everyone. My mission is simple: to help you embrace who you are, celebrate your unique journey, and feel amazing in your own skin. Whether I’m guiding a teenager to recognize her natural glow or glamming up a bride on her big day, every brushstroke is my way of saying, “You deserve to feel extraordinary—inside and out.”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t been smooth at all—start-ups are never easy—and my journey has been full of twists, self-doubt, and growth. When I left MAC Cosmetics, many assumed I’d already have a solid clientele, but in reality, I had to build everything from scratch—organically, even—before social media became the force it is today. It felt like starting over, and every new client was a hard-earned victory.
There were moments when the subjective nature of art made me question my own talent. Imposter syndrome would creep in, and I often felt that my successes were merely luck rather than true skill. In 2019, I hit a major low: at my cousin’s wedding—a day I’d long anticipated to showcase my expertise—I experienced a full-blown anxiety attack. I was nervous and overwhelmed; as the pressure mounted, with my family relying on me for flawless makeup, my hands shook, my heart raced, and I couldn’t even critique my own work. I ended up rushing through the final faces—even causing the bride to be late—and I felt completely defeated. I questioned every brush stroke, every decision; it was a stark reminder of how toxic self-doubt can be. As an artist, it’s something I still struggle with today.
That day, I realized my lack of confidence wasn’t a sudden failure—it had been silently building over time, fueled by constant comparisons and the curated perfection of social media. I was forced to pause, take a break, and reconnect with why I fell in love with this art in the first place. I learned to stay in the present, appreciate the creative process, quiet those intrusive thoughts, and practice self-compassion. Equally important was nurturing my spiritual well-being through prayer and faith, which brought peace to my mind. I remind myself that self-doubt is a natural part of being human, and I’ve learned that caring for myself—whether through rest, disconnecting from daily stresses, or finding peace in praying to God—is essential if I am to truly care for my art and my clients.
During the pandemic, our industry faced unprecedented challenges. From 2020 to 2024, the beauty sector took a massive hit. With stay-at-home orders in place, many businesses struggled or closed, DIY beauty solutions gained popularity, and beauty filters became the new norm. These changes affected my business well into 2025. Yet I truly believe nothing can replace the personalized experiences and genuine service I strive to offer. I call those years “the missing years” for our industry—a time when many of us had to completely rethink how we connect with our clients.
Throughout these challenges, I’ve held on to core values of empathy, second chances, and the power of genuine, one-on-one connections. I believe that building personalized relationships not only creates lasting memories but also enriches our overall quality of life. I work hard to silence negative thoughts, remind myself that I’m good enough, and believe that every setback is a setup for a comeback.
Now, as I look toward 2025, I feel a resurgence—an opportunity to rebuild and revive the lost art of truly personalized customer service. Even though I may not be the perfect artist for everyone, as long as I impact even one person’s life, I know I’ve done my job.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
One of my absolute favorite things about Baltimore is how it manages to feel both gritty and vibrant all at once. Our food scene is on another level—especially if you’re a seafood lover. There’s nothing like a KoKo’s Crabcake or an all-you-can-eat crab feast at Fifers on a football Sunday. I also love that so many of our top restaurants are Black-owned or women-owned, adding a whole layer of pride to the experience. Plus, the city’s art and culture scene is dynamic: the American Visionary Art Museum is unlike anything else, and neighborhoods like Hampden are a dream if you’re looking for street style inspiration (or just some really entertaining people-watching). Our sports teams—the Ravens and Orioles—bring a special kind of energy, and we’re close enough to D.C. and NYC for spontaneous day trips. But honestly, autumn in Baltimore is where the magic really happens: crisp air, colorful leaves, and a cozy vibe that’s simply beautiful.
On the flip side, I’m not a huge fan of our harsh winters or that brutal summer humidity (seriously, it can feel like a steam room on steroids). More importantly, the lack of economic diversity, persistent poverty, and income inequality continue to hold back the very communities that make Baltimore so special. Still, despite its challenges, I wouldn’t trade this city for anything. Baltimore has heart, culture, and a resilience you just can’t find anywhere else—and that’s why I’m proud to call it home.
