Community Highlights: Meet Tanisha DeShields of Teecups Cupcakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanisha DeShields.

Hi Tanisha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was growing up I had a real passion for baking, and my grandmother was my inspiration. She provided me with the confidence and the “know-how” to want to start my Teecups Bakery.

My grandmother encouraged me to bake so she could teach me, and we had a lot of fun spending time together. We were so proud when my cakes turned out nicely, the way grandmom thought they should be. She used to say “Oooooo you sure can bake Ms. Tee!”

When I went off to college and eventually moved away, grandmom and I didn’t get to bake as much anymore. I would look forward to Thanksgiving Holiday when I would do all of the baking with my grandmother “still” guiding me along the way.

She was getting older and more fragile now, but she always seemed delighted to keep our tradition going. In December 2020, my loving grandmother passed away. She was ninety-nine years old. Teecups represent the love my grandmother and I shared for baking, as well as the love we shared for each other.

I cherish her sweet memory with every single slice.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t been easy but it’s been rewarding along the way.

It took patience, and prayer, to get me where I am today. I was laid off due to Covid-19 in 2020. I decided to take my business to the next level, but doing it full-time. Best decision I ever made.

As you know, we’re big fans of Teecups Cupcakes LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are an online bakery that specializes in homestyle baked goods such as cupcakes, cakes, cookies, brownies, and special desserts. We are available for corporate, school, and personal events throughout the year.

We are known for our red velvet and vanilla cake flavors, cookie butter and circus animal cookies, our red velvet brownies, and our banana pudding of all flavors!

What sets us apart from others is the fact that we also specialize in dietary restrictions. We are able to customize mostly anything to accommodate those individuals who may be dairy-free (vegan), gluten-free, and sugar-free.

We are most proud of our ability to handle every order that comes in, especially our corporate orders which are larger. It’s just me, and I say we as if I have a team of people, but one day, I will so I speak it into existence. In 2021, we had an amazon order to complete 500 individually wrapped cupcakes in different flavors.

I was able to complete my baking on my own. It took a lot of preparation and dedication but I did it and would do it all over again. That order opened a lot of doors for us as a small black-owned female-owned business and we are so proud of that!

One quote that always stuck with me growing up was a quote from the poem “Our Deepest Fear” by Marriam Anderson.

“You playing small does not serve the world.” Always remember to push yourself even when you think you can’t.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
