Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Snyder.
Hi Scott, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
In 2000, along with Dr. Richard Patton, Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition, the founder of K-9 Kraving, Robert (Bob) Barrett, applied their knowledge of producing human food to create a consistently safe and optimally healthy raw diet dog food. In 2004, K-9 Kraving was introduced to the marketplace as the first USDA Certified Pet Food Manufacturer nationwide – lending testimony to the highest quality ingredients and manufacturing practices in the industry. To this day, our raw diet dog food is made utilizing the same sanitary equipment, ingredients, and conditions as human food.
In 2017, I took over operations and ownership of K-9 Kraving after shadowing Bob for a year. Retirement was on his mind but Bob wanted to ensure K-9 Kraving was in the hands of someone who would take the brand to the next level.
How did it all happen? One of K-9 Kraving’s biggest suppliers is my best friend which is how I was first introduced to Bob Barrett, in meeting Bob, he advised me my dogs would shed less, be more vibrant, more energetic, their overall appearance would improve, and their stools would be smaller because my dog’s bodies will use more of the food compared to cooked diets. That day, I bought a case of K-9 Kraving Chicken, Beef & Vegetable.
Fast forward 2-weeks – the results were unbelievable. Thereafter, Bob gave me a tour and allowed me to watch the process. I was astonished at the quality of ingredients. The proteins were USDA Inspected & Approved Human Grade; no 3D or 4D, no subpar leftovers, or rejects, and the vegetables were beautiful…simply, great ingredients. I was sold!
Today, we have a fantastic 13-person team; we all know our roles. It is imperative to be organized and structured to create consistency in our products. Since we do not warehouse or outsource, there is a tremendous amount of forecasting and planning to manage incoming whole foods and outgoing product to fill weekly orders. Fresh whole ingredients in on Monday, finished product shipped out on Friday.
For a small, independently owned manufacturing company, K-9 Kraving has been a pioneer:
•In 2004, K-9Kravingwas the very first pet food nationwide to achieve USDA Certification
•For the exception of Mackerel (Canada), all our proteins and vegetables are Born, Bred, Raised & Manufactured 100% in the USA
•Our Complete & Balanced Diets are made from 100% Certified Human Grade Ingredients
•All our frozen raw products are HPP-Free (uncooked for optimum nutritional value)
Over the years, our primary goal has been to maintain steady, consistent growth from year to year. We have never leveraged our product or relationships for overnight success. Our whole food suppliers we partnered with over a decade ago are still partnered with us today. Our primary growth is through word of mouth from our “Kraving Fans”, who we are incredibly grateful for. When asked why we do not participate in national ad and/or marketing campaigns consistent with larger, more well-known competitors; these are our reasons:
•Raw needs a consultative conversation, and optimally, education; not an advertisement. At K-9Kraving.com, we offer a RESOURCE tab with several training tools for retailers and new feeders
•For those without internet, we have our Customer Care Manager who has been with us over 13 years. We are only a phone call, PM or email away
Presently, like all other US manufacturer’s, we are navigating the ever-vacillating socioeconomic and national supply chain strains. But once again, since our longstanding supply partners are mostly local to the mid-Atlantic or only a couple states away, it could be worse. We count our blessings and roll with the punches.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For our actual product and manufacturing of K-9 Kraving, it has been a pretty smooth transition. However, taking over an old plant in an old part of Baltimore City presented more interesting challenges.
Since I took over Boesl Packing & K-9 Kraving Brand Products we have had to replace 3 walk-in freezers, repair underground waterlines, replace machinery, and much more. Operations has definitely been the biggest curve ball of the past 5 years.
Of course, let us not forget 2021 as a year into itself.
On a high note, our K-9 Kraving Ambassadors were amazing. As a small privately-owned brand and manufacturer, we rely on your positive experiences and sharing to spread the good word.
Throughout 2021, despite the challenged supply chain and ever-increasing cost of goods, manufacturing materials, and freight costs of our incoming supplies – our customers and positive reviews gave us the confidence to overcome so many hurdles and frustrations behind the scenes. From New York to California, and Florida up to Washington state, we have received so much love and support from our suppliers and feeders through emails, Instagram, and Facebook. Without them, it would not have been possible to survive the “constant-inconstants” of this past year.
We have been fortunate in several other ways as well. We developed a wonderful new foothold with a fantastic woman & veteran-owned, 100% single-sourced & USA rabbit supplier. It took a long time to create the necessary dietary balance and structure. Fortunately, with Dr. Richard Patton – Ph.D. Animal Nutrition, our brand-long scientific guru, we were able to achieve and launch our latest Frozen Raw Diet, “Rabbit, Duck & Vegetable”.
On the treat side of K-9 Kraving, we either lost or experienced many backorders for raw supplies. Regardless, we were able to launch our latest K-9 COOKIE: Chicken & Sweet Potato.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Boesl Packing Company is our business name; K-9 Kraving is our brand.
Owner & Chief Operations Manager
I was born and raised in Annapolis, MD and remain a Maryland native.
