Community Highlights: Meet Quintara Tucker of QB Consulting, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Quintara Tucker

Hi Quintara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always had a deep passion for working with children. From a young age, I knew that my career would revolve around helping kids grow, learn, and thrive. This passion led me to start volunteering in my community, where I quickly realized the impact I could have. Working with children not only fulfilled me but also inspired a desire to give back to the community that had supported me growing up.

I began my Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) journey after my undergraduate coursework and have been in the field since.
As I gained experience, I recognized the importance of furthering my education to truly make a difference. I wanted more for myself in terms of knowledge and expertise, so I set a goal to obtain higher education at the doctoral level. I pursued advanced studies in behavior analysis, which I am planning to finish up in the coming years.

Last year, I started my own consulting business that has allowed for me to provide behavior-analytic services to members in my community, but remotely in different locations as well. I am currently seeking licensure in Maryland to expand my services in this area.

Today, I’m proud to say that my journey has brought me to a place where I can combine my passion for working with children, my commitment to giving back to the community, and my dedication to lifelong learning. Each step has been a building block, and I’m excited to continue growing and contributing in ways that make a real difference in the lives of those I serve.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey to where I am today has definitely not been a smooth road. Like many in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), I’ve faced the usual challenges of rigorous training, navigating complex cases, and staying current with the latest research. However, as a Black BCBA, I’ve also encountered unique struggles that have shaped my experience in profound ways.

One of the most significant challenges has been the experience of being the only Black professional in various spaces, such as conferences and professional meetings. This often means feeling a heightened sense of visibility, which can be both empowering and isolating. On one hand, it’s an opportunity to represent and bring diversity to the field, but on the other hand, it can be difficult to find mentors or colleagues who share similar experiences and understand the cultural nuances I bring to my work.

Navigating these spaces sometimes means dealing with implicit biases or microaggressions, which can be exhausting. However, I’ve found strength in community—connecting with other BCBAs and professionals of color, both within and outside of ABA, has been incredibly supportive. I’ve also turned these challenges into opportunities to advocate for greater diversity and inclusion within our field, whether that’s by mentoring aspiring BCBAs of color, by contributing to conversations on how our practices can be more culturally responsive, or use my social media platform to call for action in the field.

In dealing with these struggles, I’ve learned the importance of self-care and the need to create spaces where I can be authentic and recharge. This journey has taught me resilience and the value of persistence, and it has strengthened my commitment to making ABA an inclusive and supportive field for all practitioners.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always a unique and curious child, someone who was naturally drawn to exploring the world around me. I had a deep sense of wonder about how things worked and loved asking questions, often finding myself lost in thought or discovery. My curiosity extended to people as well; I was fascinated by different personalities and cultures, which made me eager to learn and understand more about others.

People often described me as angelic, not just because I was kind and gentle, but because I had a genuine concern for others’ well-being. I was the kind of child who would go out of my way to help someone in need, whether it was a classmate struggling with homework or a friend going through a tough time. This kindness made me very approachable, and I found it easy to connect with people of all ages.

My interests were wide-ranging, from science and nature to stories and art. I was always eager to try new things, whether it was a new hobby or learning about a new topic. This blend of curiosity, kindness, and approachability shaped who I am today, both personally and professionally.
