Hi Onica Alexis, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I was born in Georgetown, Guyana. I came to Brooklyn Nyc at a very young age. My mother was a home base hairstylist and a home health aid. I would always help wash her clients hair, sweep the floor, braid down their hair for a weave, etc. When she finally got a big salon, I worked there for 10 years. Then worked with a few different agencies. I traveled to different states doing many different events as a professional hairstylist/makeup artist. After about 10 years of that, I wanted a slight change. I wanted to be home with my children more and make money at the same time. Also the fact that NYC is very extensive was a big factor in my life. I decided to move to Laurel MD August 2021 to provide hairstyling service from my home. I started my business in MD Feb 2022. I still traveled to NY every month ; and worked for about a week at an upscale salon. I did that until I started gaining clients in MD. In the mist of everything, I created a hair and skin moisturizer called “SHEA POTION” moisturizer for hair and skin. Women, men and children can use it daily. IT is made with natural ingredients. I have about 6-7 scents available for purchase. I decided to create Shea Potion for many reasons. It’s a 2-in-1 product, smells amazing, can be used daily, beneficial for hair moisture, helps clear up skin imperfections, made with natural ingredients, etc. I now have a great flow of clientele. I provide fast private service to people that don’t like to wait long for service. They like to start their service on time (because I can stand constant lateness). I provided hair care options and many various hairstyle choices.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course not lol, The first year and change of me trying to gain clientele was so hard. I used different social media platforms to promote my business and my Shea potion moisturizer. I wasn’t getting much results. I almost gave up the business because I was getting so frustrated. I expressed my feelings to a loved one’s and was told that I was making a “BIG” mistake if I gave up. I just have to try harder. I stayed up to date with weekly google posts. Eventually people started noticing my business. Word of mouth also helped.

I provided professional hair services in a private setting. I specialize in various hair trends like weave install, wig install, wig maintenance, shorts hair-cuts, braids, pony tails, twist, alopecia clients, crochet, hair coloring, silk-press, haircare add ons, etc. What makes me different is that I am 20+ years experienced and worked with different hair types. I am called the super beauty because I provide fast accurate service. Meaning you will not be in my chair for 8 hrs for a style that only take 2 hrs to complete. Clean and comfortable homely salon environment. I do appointments only! Even if it’s booked the same day upon my approval. Time is “VERY” important to me so I’m very serious about being on-time for your appointments. Brand wise I’m proud that I can provide service to certain people like women that need my full attention and peace of mind while getting their hair done. If anyone has laptop work to complete, they are more than welcome to do so once it doesn’t interfere with your hairstyling process. I don’t provide service to children under 12. I only provide service to mature crowds.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
To have plenty patience with your dreams. God knows that I have to pray for that everyday. You will get discouraged sometime in your journey but, that is also a part of the process to help you stay level. I think it is better to keep going than to stop and wonder what if I stuck in there? I wonder how far I would have went?
