Today we’d like to introduce you to Muhyi Ali. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Teaneck, New Jersey native Amatullah’Muhyi – who goes by Muhyi – is a filmmaker, actress, and show tune enthusiast. Muhyi received her BFA in filmmaking in 2017.
After graduation Muhyi traveled with her award-winning film Undefined: A Muslim-American Musical, currently available on Amazon Prime, and co-founded AfroTwin Productions. With AfroTwin Productions, Muhyi has been able to travel all over the world and connect with filmmakers and creators with varying backgrounds. Aside from working and producing content for people across the African diaspora she ventured off to receive her master’s in fine art from Howard University.
With AfroTwin Productions, Muhyi has been able to provide content that reflects the varying communities that she belongs to including Bodegas, Spots, & Restaurants (renamed “SPOTS”), a travel food series where a host goes to varying restaurants owned by Black and Brown people in the community in order to showcase them to a wider audience.
In 2021 Muhyi founded Always in Bloom, an anthology series, podcast, and resource, covering women’s health and general reproductive information. Muhyi is dedicated to sharing stories, connecting creatives, and maintaining a sense of familiarity through the power of media in order to advance her people.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Muhyi has been met with many roadblocks along this journey, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, Muhyi had to move from their family home due to finances.
In 2020 during her commute to create the web series she suffered from a car accident losing her only method of transportation, Muhyi has found various ways to overcome and continue forward on her journey of media creation. The triumphs are what make the trials worth every step. There have been multiple financial hardships along the way, as well as countless rejections. In no way has Muhyi been able to fixate or focus on those rejections, because there’s a greater mission ahead.
As you know, we’re big fans of AfroTwin Productions. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
AfroTwin Productions is a multimedia production company focused on the authentic storytelling of those across the African diaspora. The production company is focused on making sure our stories are told by us. We specialize in sharing stories of identity and exposing systemic truths. What sets us apart from others is our clear dedication to the community and ensuring that the people benefit first and foremost. Muhyi is most proud of her venture into Always In Bloom an anthology series and podcast covering the female body, expectations, realities, and experiences within.
This brand has been able to connect with the community by sharing all too common stories and generating a successful crowdfunding campaign for our first feature film, Always In Bloom: Amara. Readers should know that if they are looking to have their story told in its truest form if they are looking to be heard and validated through media, we’re the ones to do it. We offer feedback, editing, producing, consulting, and more.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
